Okay so I am compiling a list of used older model cars from http://www.vhix.com. Budget will probably be nor more then $10,000. All are at least '03s and cars are sedans. I don't like the idea of people being able to see into my trunk. That's why I'm not completely sold on the idea of a small SUV.
I am 25, first time driver and first time college student, so I'm not ready for the mom mini van! lol
My specs are 4 doors,Automatic trans, A/C, LATCH, lock and retracting seat belts in at least the back seat, power locks and windows, CD player, shoulder belt for the middle seat in the back. Car must also comfortably seat a Graco Nautilus in the middle seat. Great for a college student, I'll be going to community college that is about 10 miles away, by freeway. I live in the city. I can get to all the surrounding cities with in 15 minutes by freeway, but I prefer the regular roads, as the high speed (70 mph in Michigan) makes me feel uncomfortable. Safe and Easy to drive is what I'm looking for. Cars low on my list is strictly for their MPG or lack there of.

To make a long story short, the ignition clicks when I try to start it. I've been told it's Passlock. If I get a new key, will the ignition recognize it better? My current key is a little beat up. Or, do I need a new ignition switch like the dealer says? They're quoting me $150-$250 for the switch. Very frustrated...car won't start when it's cold/wet outside. And I live in Michigan.
PS-Battery is fine...it will start after 10-30 mintutes.

My friend said not to pay one of my credit card and the medical bills which I can't pay anyways, and just let them stay on my credit for 7/10 years and then it will fall off? He said it's just like filing BK without doing it and nor can they garnish my paycheck. Is this true?

Okay, so I own a 2003 Saturn Ion and it has this funny little trick it does in the winter time. It drives itself!
As I'm driving (even after I've given it time to warm up it will do this) it starts to accelerate on it's own to 55mph. When I hit the brake it only slows it down 35mph. As it's doing this the RP-M's are up around 5,000-6,000 rotations. Also when I try and hit the brake it feels like I'm stepping on the gas pedal and brake at the same time but I'm not! The only way to stop it is throw it in neutral and pull off to the side.
I took it to Saturn and they couldn't get the car to do it so they just did a few minor upgrades and told me it shouldn't do it again. I didn't find out until I called them this winter that they really didn't know what was wrong with it but just gave me my car back on the assumption it won't do it again. And for the rest of last winter it didn't But this winter it started to do it again! And no, my cruise control is not stuck because I don't have it on and no, my floor mats aren't bunched up behind the pedals.
Any ideas as to what this is? I've read a lot of reviews on Saturns having problems in cold weather but not one like mine.
I'm sure I'd realize if my floor mats were bunched up on TOP of the pedals. I'm not an imbecile, thanks.

It almost acts lilke its not getting enough gas to start up. I have had it put on the computer ( with 0 problems on that) and had the battery checked( battery is good). A service engine sign (not the symbol but wording on the display) will come on once when it doesn't turn over at all. It has been a few months since and oil change BUT oil has been added......Any ideas?

GM and Chrysler are big union shops. The union leadership overwhelmingly supported Obama's presidental bid. Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are leading the charge to buy stock in these companies. My question is - Is the bailout money repayment for them helping get Obama elected?
The big 3 auto makers only have themselves to blame for their problems. The UAW contracts and pensions are only a symptom, the real problem is that they manufacturer a poor quality product.
I have been looking to purchase a new car, so I purchase the Consumer Reports used car buying guide. I purchase this book to see the repair history of a model that I am interested in. In 2003 the big 3 had 9 of 12 vehicles on the least satisfying score card and 0 on the most satisfying list. In 2005, the least satisfying list was dominated by GM and Chrysler and GM was the only US Automaker with 1 car on the most satisfied list. Not one foreign owned auto manufacturer was on 2005 least satisfied list.
I bought a Honda CRV yesterday and no one had a bad thing to say about it in over 200 customer reviews. It was a consumer reports best buy.
I almost bought a Mazda Tribute, but this was a Ford Escape dressed in Mazda clothing. Repair history and customer reviews were terrible on both vehicles. The Saturn Vue was given a so so review. Chevy Equinox was given a worse than average for repairs.
So my view is let the big 3 go into bankruptcy, let them reorganize into a leaner and meaner manufacturing organization, let them get out of the oppressive union contracts, and keep the tax money in Washington. Thoughts?
Sad to say it, but the union contracts were a prime reason why there is a problem. Sure management had their part as well. But the UAW is activily pursuing this bailout with congress and the management of these companies.
Logan - I wanted to buy a american car, the repair history on them were terrible. I owned several american cars in the 1980's and 1990's, they were in the shop constantly.
The Honda I purchased was built / assembled in Liberty Ohio. So are these not considered american jobs? GM uses many of the same suppliers that Honda and Toyota use here in the states.
I am all for US Automanufacturing, but if they cannot build a product that is competitive and high quality. Then there is a problem that needs to be addressed. Maybe a reorganization is something that they need to learn a lesson.
Bob H - if given the choice of feeding your family or not working. What would you do? If someone makes a 100,000 putting bolts onto a car, they are over paid for the skills they have. Reality check my friend.

2003 Saturn L200 Sedan recently does not show my gas, tempurature, or miles.
As if my car was turned off, my gas gauge does not work nor does my temp gauge. My Miles are displayed digitally. The miles are on, and the display is there, but they are not increasing as i drive.
I also have a few other lights on. I have a warning light of an outlined car with a wrench in the middle (Not an engine icon), as well as my airbag light is on too.
Does anyone possibly know what this can mean. I would like an estimated cost of what this could be.
It's hard to drive around not knowing how much gas i do/ don't have. I can't even tell how many miles I've gone.
I assume the gas/temp/and mileage gauge are all connected, I'm wondering if anyone has ever seen this before?

Ok, so some extra information... We've looked at both fuse boxes already, both the one under the hood and the one under the dashboard console. I double checked the one under the hood to see if one of the red fuses was labeled differently, but none are. Is it possible that someone replaced the oil reset fuse with a regular fuse so you just can't tell the difference now? Does anyone happen to know exactly where this reset fuse should be in the fuse box?

I tried going to the government safety site, but it's not loading properly for my browser and I can't select links to search specific categories. I have looked on other places online and many forum posts have mentioned a recall on the 2003 saturn transmissions (and describe the exact problem I had- a grinding noise on sharp turns that was the result of a leak which lead to the transmission going out completely). I see it's a common problem online for this model and year, but no further info on a recall. I know it's a safety issue because my particular case my transmission locked up mid-intersection and couldn't be restarted, so it could definitely be considered a safety problem (If I hadn't jumped it into first I'd have been hit by a semi). Any info or links to direct 2003 saturn vue recalls listed would be appreciated.
Also- saturn doesn't tell you about recalls when you call them (I 800 7 sautrn)

I have a high MPG Saturn SL2 right now but I'm driving 31 miles one way to work for now, in November I'll be driving 5 miles one way but there will be a lot more snow up to where I'm moving so I'd like something that could get through the snow better and thought the Tracker might be good at it while still maintaining somewhat decent MPG

Resolved Question: Saturn L200 Idling Rough?
I have a 2003 2.2L Saturn L200 and it's idling what I'd call "rough" with a sound thats almost like a diesel engine would make. Its IDLING RIGHT AROUND 800 RPM, so thats normal enough. It just had an oil change 2 weeks ago and its got 53K miles on the clock. Any ideas?
