Let's say both pilots on board a jetliner become incapacitated for some reason. Is it reasonably possible for someone with no flying experience whatsoever to safely land the otherwise normally behaving aircraft on his/her own with only help from the ground? This question is based on a bizarre dream I recently had.

  • Open Question: should i be concerned about the pilot chappie?
I have started my own low budget airline and called it “Easy Shaft” the only problem being is the Japanese pilot chappie is a bit strange, you see Great Uncle Wilberforce found him on an island in the pacific three months ago shouting at the sun and looking quite dishevelled, apparently he has been on holiday there since 1942. Given that the chap is a pilot we decided to give him the job, our first flight will be to America and ever since we told him he has been lighting candles and wrapped a ruddy white scarf around his head and is running around shouting “Banzi”. Could this just be excitement or the fact that he may be a raving loony? Oh and “Biffy” will only travel with us if we make Sindy the hostess. Can any one help?

  • Open Question: Parents' friend turns into brother's girlfriend? Ew. Need Help!?
Alright, so this is pretty much one of the most soap-opera like situations I've ever come across. Here's the story Grandma's dying, needs a caretaker. This is where Julie comes in. After grandma dies, Julie becomes a friend of my father and mother. Julie comes with us to a festival in our city, where she becomes strangely attached to my brother following his telling the family he can now recieve free airline tickets to go anywhere in the world he wants. Julie and my brother start dating behind my parents' back without their knowledge. I'm the only one who really knows about it. Julie is THIRTY THREE and my brother is TWENTY. What am I supposed to do? I've been home sick today and my brother and Julie are together in his room. I'm SO sickened by this.
  • Open Question: Do you think something has to be done with the size of airline seats?
Last week on a US AIRWAYS flight, as we were boarding and taking our seats... there was a larger man who was trying to sit in his seat (aisle towards the middle of the plane) and was told my the flight attendant that he would have to pay for a 2nd seat because his shoulders and arms stretched over to the middle seat where a woman was sitting. The plane only had a few empty seats left , one of which was next to me.. I told him he was welcome to sit next to me and that I could use the company. The point of this story is that I could see the humiliation on his face and he had sunglasses on but yet I could still see he was crying (for a good portion of the trip). If you think about it why are there so many seats on an airplane if it can't hold EVERYONE comfortably? I'll tell you why its for more profits in an industry that is basically ripping off the consumer everyday with outrageous fares due to oil prices, checking bags, no drinks, no meal, no service, and now it seems you can't even fly if you don't fit into a certain height/weight requirement. Now I know there are those of you who think its the overweight persons fault they can't fit but if you had any common sense you would know there are other reasons for being overweight than just overeating. Do you think airlines should reconfigure seat dimensions? Why hasn't this come into serious debate today as the number of overweight individuals is rapidly approaching the 50% mark?

  • Open Question: What would you do if this happened to you?
I checked in 1 piece of luggage at the airline counter and received a baggage claim receipt with my boarding pass. This was for a round-trip plane ticket. Shockingly, upon arriving, my checked back was not in with the other bags that came out in baggage claim. The next day, the bag still did not come to the airport. I notified the customer service in both the departure and arrival cities, and was told "Your bag is NOT here, we apologize." The loss of items including the bag itself would have amounted to over $1,000 dollars. Finally I had to make my return flight and STILL had not yet gotten my checked bag back. After completing my roundtrip travel, I was back in the airport I originally started from. Astonishingly, I found my bag in the baggage claim service with my name on the bag and the wrong tag label improperly attached to the bag. When I confronted customer service, they said "We're sorry, we didn't know this was your bag." Opening the bag, I found the bag was looted, all the valuables inside the bag were gone, my shaver was broken apart, and the cost of items stolen amounted to over 500 dollars. Should I get reimbursed for this? How would you handle it if it were your bag? In addition, I lost an irreplaceable item (photographs of a recent trip I took along with all the negatives) One of the reasons I had a false sense of security was I had to PAY $25 each way to have my bag checked.

  • Open Question: Do Canadian airlines reimburse you or not if they lose your luggage checked under the plane?
In the USA there's a discount airline called Spirit Airlines. They charge very cheap fares, but they charge $25 each way to check in a bag and then pick it up at "baggage claim" at the airport destination city. I paid the premium to check in my bag, but found that my bag did not arrive in the baggage claim. I then waited for the next flight and the flight after that and my bag still didn't come out of baggage claim. Inside the bag I had photographs, an antique book, an ipod, lots of important irreplaceable things, total monetary amount lost more than $800 dollars. I then found out the airline is not responsible at all for the loss. There's no tracking system, so if this happens to you, you're just out of luck. Is that how it works in Canada or not? Or is it better than that?

  • Open Question: Here we go... Are you prepared for bankruptcy? If so don't worry the Republicans protected themselves.?
The Republican party is responsible for the dilemma that we find ourselves in including Fanny Mae and Freddies bailout. They created the circumstances for the bailout to become necessary that is requiring us to have to step in. The created the regulatory atmosphere for Airlines to teeter on Bankruptcy, jobs to go overseas and Credit card companies to get theres no matter what. They created the War in IRAQ so that they could enrich themselves with no bid contracts. All the while compiling a astronomical debt... The Republican mantra is I got mine go get yours. It is one of Greed and Power and both McCain and Palin believe in it... If you are thinking that they are going to save us... realize that they created this mess... One more time will put you so far in the hole none of us will ever get back. You fell for it in 2000 and you were wrong.... You fell for it in 2004 and now your falling for it again. There is a reason that the Republicans moved to change the bankruptcy laws. It wasn't to protect you It was to protect them. They know whats coming... Wake up America!!!!

  • Open Question: Why is the liquidation value of airlines greater than the enterprise value of the company?
I am still not totally sure about this as I am just doing some back of the napkin calculations of the assets of major airlines such as Jet Blue and United Airlines. However, it appears that the market value of some airlines assets could very well be greater than the enterprise value of the company. If this were in fact true, it would seem that some airlines or private equity firms would want to acquire others to to get the value of their assets.

  • Open Question: What's the difference between the Boeing 747-400 & the Boeing 777-300ER?
I'm from Manila, Philippines. I've loved airplanes since I was young & won't ever tire of seeing them fly. Together with my girlfriend, we'd go to NAIA to watch them take off. We're there anytime from 10 pm to 1 am, trying to catch any planes that would fly during these hours. There are 2 planes that caught my attention, Emirates' 777-300ER & Korean Air's 747-400. Emirates leaves at 12:20 AM daily followed by Korean Air at 12:35 AM. They usually taxi together as Emirates is always late in leaving the terminal (they're always both late anyway). There was something I noticed in the way they took off. Emirates takes off just past the NAIA Terminal 1 so we can't see much as it flies. However, Korean Air is already climbing up just BEFORE reaching NAIA Terminal 1. There's a fence between the cargo & passenger terminals so it's very easy for us to see them start climbing. Why does the 747-400 take off faster than the 777-300ER? Isn't the Emirates 777 supposed to have MORE POWERFUL ENGINES than the Korean Air's 747? Is having 4 engines instead of 2 make the 747-400 a better plane than the 777-300ER? Is that the diffrence why they climb at different sections of the runway? I've yet to experience riding in these planes & I'm very much hoping I will someday. What's your best assessment, especially from those who've flown on these airlines on these planes?
  • Open Question: What to think, what to do.?
I am for whatever reason mostly lookin for man answers here, but females can chime in too. Sorry if this gets long. Well through various turns of events I have become some what of a nosey wife. Not the first time this has happened but last night I listened to my husbands voicemail only to here a message from a female. Nothing explicit, but not just a business call. I texted her of course she would not elaborate so I went to him. He said they met on a flight airline flight and exchanged cards for business purposes. Then the other day she called and texted him. After pushing for answers he said that he's not sleeping with her he has never slept with anyone but me since we have been married he just likes the attention. He has always been a flirt and I can deal with that just not blatently behind my back to the point he needs to have private conversations. To the point these woman have the oppurtunity to believe he is available. This isn't the first time this is happened. I truly believe there is has been physical relationships regardless of what he says. I told him he either needs to pick me and if he wants to be friends with a female I need to be able to be friends with them too or he needs to choose them and move on with his life. Of course he says he picks me. But I don't believe him. Am I just making this out to be more then it is, is he just telling me what he thinks I want to hear, and why does he do this? Help need some peace of mind good bad or ugly. As for the contact information he went through the trouble of storing the number under a business contacts name.
