  • Resolved Question: Abernathy cedar chest with water damage to veneer.?
I recently inherited an Art Deco bedroom set, circa 1938-1945, and a cedar chest from my grandmother. Both need refinishing, but the cedar chest has water damage to the back, but only on the veneer top. It has a 'certificate' in the lid from Abernathy Furniture of Kansas City, MO, telling me it was made with cedar from Tennessee, and had a copper 'weather ring' to keep water damage out. Unfortunately, my grandmother kept it under a window that leaked. The only damage is to the veneer in the back of the lid, and you can see that it does have a 'laminate veneer' although it is wood. It looks more like walnut to me than cedar, and I don't want to restore it incorrectly. Can anyone help me with this? I have tried researching the web, but can't even find a place to help me date the chest. All I know is Abernathy was founded in 1856, moved from Leavonworth to Kansas City and was destroyed by fire at some point. I don't want to sell it, but want to restore a family hierloom. The inside of the chest is solid cedar, with a copper 'weatherproofing' seal. The top has some kind of veneer, and that is what is warped. The grain doesn't look like cedar, it looks like walnut or maybe an oak stained walnut. You can see where they put a board that wasn't cedar over the inside of the lid and covered it with the veneer. If I could just figure out anything about the company or date it by the appearance, I'd have a better idea of how to restore it. Unfortunately, I had to rent a van to move it here, so I can't take it to a woodworking shop to find out the origin of the veneer.
  • Resolved Question: Nightlife Industry?
In your opinion, How is the nightlife industry these days? I will be pursuing the nightlife industry in Los Angeles soon, and I want to know what you all think needs improvement. I was in Miami a couple of weeks ago, and everything just looks the same. Either it's a huge dance club, with disco balls, and trance music, or a stylish lounge, with art deco furniture and a bar. I wish there was more variety.
  • Resolved Question: any interior decorators here?
I'm in the process of planning to decorate my room. Hoping to end up with girlie glamour, rather than sickly sweet or tacky. At the moment the walls are just white, I have a pinkish tone, neutral carpet and gorgeous art deco mahogany furniture. I'm lucky that my room is fairly big, and very bright and sunny. I'd like it pink, and thinking a fairly subtle pale pink on 3 walls and maybe wallpaper on the other to create a feature wall. I have quite a few pictures to hang. I also really need shelving which is what I really need advice with. I'm a mature student so don't have lots of money. I have quite a lot of books, and as they're text books they tend to be oversize and heavy so as far as I know those nice 'floating' shelves won't be strong enough to support them. would really apreciate any suggestions/stockists etc. Oh...and I'm in London so please don't tempt with all kinds of gorgeous things from afar, lol lol....FAO fritya....there was a clue in poor mature student....mahogany bookcases don't come cheap, and take up a whole lot of room. Hate overfurnished cluttered rooms! FAO fuffycat.....I ordered a swatch of that wallpaper a few days ago!

  • Resolved Question: Decorating Resources?
Does anyone have any resources for furniture suppliers? I'm looking for something rather specific and would also like the price to be right, a difficult combination. I'm looking for classic, almost victorian-style furniture, perhaps art deco as well. I would also prefer lighter furniture since we move constantly. Maybe English campaign-style. The other constraint is price, the less expensive the better. Real wood is also a huge plus. I know its insane but I find that most furniture manufacturers make things just too heavy and big to be moving around! Also, I really like Louis and Georgian styles, anyone know resources for this? How about reproduction furniture? I'm starting fresh after decorating my New York apt in modern furniture and I want a more timeless appeal but am having the hardest time! Thanks! by affordable I mean under $3k. I just don't want generic Ashley furniture things in that price range. I'm looking for something off the beaten path, i.e. other than Ethan Allen, WS Home and all those catalogues. Thanks!

  • Resolved Question: If you look on Ebay or Ikea every one is claiming their object is Eames or Art Deco?
What really defines these styles? What makes something Eames style? What makes it Art Deco style? Any help with definitions would be greatly appreciated. If you could refrain from using Wikpedia I would greatly appreciate it. I know it is not a reliable source since it is fluid and anyone can add to the text of it. Links are appreciated. I just want to learn about these 2 styles. I find them very interesting. I do not have a libral arts background and would like to learn more. I only learned about technology, so anything else is great. If you have book suggestions on furniture or archetecture that would be wonderful. If you can think of a better category for these questions please let me know. Well look at the Ikea stuff they are claiming it is Eames. I know it is not. I am familiar with the chair. I have seen it in person. I know someone who had one and loved it. He loved to live in that chair. I have a chair of another designer and I live in that chair as well. It is a form following function comfort factor thing. Thank you for you help.
