Open Question: I'm having trouble breathing again?
Two years ago I had a breathing problem where I couldn't take a full breath. The year after that I seemed pretty good. Now I've been having it again, but it's gotten a bit worse. I went to a doctor and the doctor couldn't find anything wrong with me so she just prescribed me an inhaler. Now I don't have it. I thought that I would be okay without it because the problem went away last year. Now it all just came back. What do you think is wrong? I don't have asthma.
Open Question: Can someone be allergic to agave?
For years I thought I just had a bad reaction to alcohol. The reaction was always that my chest starts feeling incredibly tight and I have increasing trouble breathing where I feel like I'm going to pass out. I'd suddenly feel the strong need to vomit and can't stop until everything in my stomach is gone. Soon I can start breathing again and feel fine. First couple of times it happened were the first times I drank and so I and everyone thought that I couldn't hold my liquor and avoided the whole thing for fear of not breathing.
Recently I've started to drink wine and other spirits with no ill consequence. Then one night I decided to try a margarita. Same tight chest feeling and need to vomit and relief once my stomach was empty. I thought this odd as it was only a single drink but dismissed it until recently when I was out and given a tequila shot. Very shortly thereafter I had the same reaction as I had to the margarita. I started to think about it and realized that all those early experiences also involved tequila.
I've decided to avoid tequila at all costs now but wonder about my "symptoms" as the only thing I can find with "tight chest" is asthma and I'm pretty sure it isn't that.
Open Question: Cigarette smoke coming in through space behind kitchen cupboards (what's up with those anyway?)?
I've got allergies and respiratory, asthma-like problems, and stuff like cigarette smoke *really* gets to me. That sucks enough socially, but I can't stand it coming into my flat. I'm on the middle floor of a 5 storey app block, and the stairway often has a really horrible stale smoke smell, but it's also mixed with cooking and just an old smell. I try to have the window closest to my floor open, but in freezing weather that's not so good.
We've put some insulation tape all around my front door and blocked up the unused key holes and it seemed to have worked, but every so often I get smoke through anyway, and I don't know why. Could it come through the floorboards?!
Some of my kitchen cupboards are built over pipes that run vertically along the wall between floors. The bottom cupboards of those don't have backs that fit 100% - what I mean is when you look into them you can see a space of about 10cm where the back of the cupboard stops and instead you can see the wall and the pipes. From there it smells real bad. We stuffed plastic bags into the spaces a few weeks back, but that doesn't seem to be holding up anymore...
The kitchen sink cupboard also has the smell, there it seems to come from spaces left around the pipes that are going vertically through the wall, into my bathroom( which strangely does not have the smell!). Again, those holes are cut way too big, we stuffed'em with plastic bags, but the smell is coming through here, too.
Is it OK to spray some sort of foam plastic into these holes to seal them up? Or is that a bad idea, blocking access to the pipes? I mean, I'm used to pipes being *inside* the walls, and there they are totally stuffed, but I don't know. Would they overheat or something? Why is there so much space left around, is that really totally shoddy work or is it for a reason?
Sorry, this question turned into many :*)
Open Question: What is a bronchospasm (or bronchial spasm)?
I've had a cough for 4 weeks now. I went to the doctor's like a week and a half ago. I got a chest x-ray and he said there was a little bit of stuff in my lungs, it wasn't pneumonia, and he was going to treat it like bronchitis. I feel fine and I don't have a fever, just a cough that is sometimes dry and sometimes isn't. When I do cough something up, its like kind of clear/white. Earlier today when I started coughing, it felt like something around where my throat or chest was started closing or something, and I could barely breathe. It sounded really weird when I was trying to breathe. I don't know what wheezing sounds like, but it might have been like that. It went away after about a minute, and I kept coughing a lot after that, it was a more productive cough. It scared me because its the first time this happened. My mom said it might have been a bronchial spasm, so I was wondering what that is. Also, I don't smoke, I'm not around smokers, and I don't have asthma.
Open Question: Can you meet a guardian angel in a dream?
Okay, this is weird. Sometime this morning, I had a dream that an angel appeared over my bed. I was looking at her and she was just like there - so real. I finally asked what was she doing there because it started to scare me and she looked to the side. When I looked to the side (to see what she was looking at) I saw my son lying in a bed and she calmly spoke "go to him". I immediately woke up and turned my lamp on and got out of my bed and went into his room and he was having an asthma attack.
My question is - was this his guardian angel warning me? Was this a conincidence? What? I've never had this type of dream and I was wondering if anyone had any insight.
Thanks so much.

Open Question: What is a safe way to lose weight?
I am 48 and weight 188, that makes my 50 pounds over weight and for my health I need to lose weight. About 2 years ago I was jogging and power walking. I could walk a 11 min mile without any trouble. But, I now have asthma and have problems breathing if I walk too fast at work (I work as a CNA @ nursing home). I'm not a smoker and this is the only health problem I have. My inhaler caused me to gain this weight and I don't have health insurance at work nor can I afford it on my own.
How can I lose 50 pounds without killing myself? I can power walk nor jog and not ever use a stair stepper. Is there any cheap health insurance out there that I might get on my low wages??
I eat a very low calorie diet already. I work 10 to 6 AM and sleep from 7 to 2 PM. I don't eat breakfast, unless it is @ 2 pm. I now walk to work, couse my car is broke. But with my asthma it is hard to walk slow sometimes. And work is soo slow, I sit almost all night with out getting exercise.
Open Question: Closer, my poem - what do you think?
Closer
It started one Thursday
The sun was hot
The hay we were bringing in
It was a day, threatening of fear
The pain and frustration
Started in his eyes
When he couldn't breathe
We could see the effort in his face
He fought for each breath
He felt sick
He wanted to work
Not to sit by and watch us do it
But he couldn't stand up
He took some medicine, a little medicine
It worked hardly at all
No release from the suffering
But he survived
By sheer willpower
And the love of his friends
Their support and care
From that day on
We saw closer to his heart
Who he really is
Why he acts the way he does
What he means to us
I feel sometimes his pain
I want to help him
But I don't know how
Remember that hurt in his eyes?
It goes beyond asthma
But into his heart and past
He is too old for his fifteen years
And I want to bring
Him closer
To freedom from
That pain
A sense of true release
A letting go
That can bring him closer
To what being free means
Open Question: Cold and Cough symptoms- any quick fixes?
I've been coughing pretty bad for about 4 days now. I woke this morning to a runny nose and have been blowing my nose every 5 minutes. I'm slightly achy and have a headache and fever.
I'm wonderin gif you guys have any suggestions that don't involve going to the doctor but do involve any home remedies or effective over the counter medicine. Also, I have asthma. I just started back school this week and can't be sick! Help!
Open Question: Need some help figuring out what's wrong?
When I was around 12 I was diagnosed with Asthma. It was pretty controlled then and I only had a few attacks when I would do a lot of continuous exercising. I am now 21 and have had the most horrible trouble dealing with my breathing problems the last 4 years. It started out as having shortness of breathe all the time out of the blue. Then after awhile I started wheezing and my throat would get tight. Now I can't even sleep for more than 4 hours at a time without waking up because I have an attack while I'm sleeping. When I wake up I have to go straight to my inhaler. This happens every night, all night. I have shortness of breathe constantly even while at rest. I have had an EKG, heart ultra-sound, cat scan on my chest and nasal passage, x-rays everything. All that has been found is some sinitis but I doubt that's what is causing all of this. I take Albuterol which only works for about 2 hours along with Ipratropium and I also take Symbicort. It seems medicine works for awhile then stops working. So I'm pretty much abusing my medicine by taking more than is perscribed because it's not controlling these attacks. I've tried Prednisone but it didn't do anything. I had to apply for SSI because of my condition and can't do anything active. I'm scared to even go out for more than 2 hours without my inhaler and nebulizer. I just don't know what to do. I can't work and I have bills and medicine to pay for. I have no insurance, so that sucks even more.
It's just been really bad. I used to play sports, and play guitar and sing. Now I can't do none of that. It sucks. Any suggestions would help.

Open Question: Question about fitness routine?
I am overhauling my fitness lifestyle. After a diagnosis of asthma 6 months ago, I went from working out everyday to not being able to work out at all without having an asthma attack every time I would try. I am now 10 pounds over weight and now that my asthma is under control I have purchased a health club membership and here is what I am considering for my routine:
Treadmill/Elliptical trainer (alternate machines on different days) 30-40 minutes
Balance Ball DVD workout - varies from 10-25 minutes
working out 3-4 days a week
I know I need to start gradual since it's been so long since I've been able to work out but what do you think of these two combination? Thanks for your advice!

One of the elements that many novels and movies portray is how there is a character that the other characters establish as the underdog. The character exhibits traits that may come across as peculiarity, loneliness, or maybe just high intelligence. This person is often teased and burdened, which William Golding demonstrates blatantly in his novel, Lord of the Flies. A group of boys are marooned on a desolate island after a plan crash, and the natural tensions of panic and chaos occur amongst themselves. One of the older, smarter boys named Piggy is at the core of being mocked due to his insight of their circumstances and disabilities. However, he realizes he has to use his wits to gain the cooperation of everyone to survive and formulate a rescue plan.
The rest of the young boys deem their situation as an adventure; a notion that is crushed when the mature and intellectual twelve year-old Piggy surfaces. Ralph, the central protagonist, is the first to tease him after Piggy regretfully tries to tell the uninterested boy his name: “They used to call me ‘Piggy’.”(Golding 5). Ralph simply responds to this by shrieking with laughter shouting “Piggy! Piggy!” (Golding 5). Ralph’s teasing of Piggy fades away towards the end of the novel; the other boys, especially the obsessive choir headmaster Jack, bombard him all throughout the book until his demise. People come up with myriads of nicknames for that one person who is different than what is considered normal. In these boys’ cases, however, Piggy’s difference—his maturity and intellect—is what the boys indirectly depend on in the beginning for their survival.
Golding’s description of Piggy in the beginning of the novel states: “he was shorter than the fair boy and very fat…looked up through thick spectacles” (Document A). Before Piggy met Ralph, he is aware of the situation and plans to “learn all the survivors’ names so that they can establish a form of order and be rescued” (Golding 5). Piggy’s aptitude as well as his cleverness is also shown when he is called to a physical task, to which he claims he cannot do due to his Asthma. This is best shown when he is disinclined to swim:
“I can't swim. I wasn't allowed. My asthma----“(Golding 7)
Ralph deduces his lie, but from then on, Piggy is left out of most of the physical activities the boys do, “on account of my asthma” (Golding 3)
Piggy’s body and status are different from that of the other boys on the island, but so are his thoughts and approach of their situation. His initial thought is for he and the boys to be rescued off of the island, to which the boys do not support. They either follow the idea of Ralph and being free, or that of Jack and his choir boys, which hunt pigs for food. Piggy realizes and mentions the pilots are “all dead,” and that they are on an island: “Nobody don’t know we’re here. Your dad don’t know, nobody don’t know—“(Golding 8). The boys become ever more reluctant to the idea of rescue, because Piggy says “we may stay here till we die” (Golding 8). Jack, instead, reassures the boys by verbally abusing Piggy to make him look foolish and irrational. Piggy is then treated unfairly at a gathering Jack arranges, where he serves all the boys a piece of their hunted pig save for. Towards the end of the novel, Jack and his hunters become fanatical over killing pigs, which leaves one of the boys murdered. Piggy tries to cover up for the way the boys acted, insisting to Ralph that “it was an accident…he asked for it” (Golding 140). Piggy’s fears of obsession consuming the boys come true, and he and Ralph go to Jack and his hunters to try to get their heads focused back on being rescued and maintaining order. Unfortunately, Jack and his hunters roll a boulder on Piggy, killing him and all sense of civilization and order on the island.
Given that Piggy saw their situation different than the others, and because he looked and acted other than how the other boys did, they remained prejudice towards him and cast him and his ideas away from what they believed. Piggy wanted to be rescued, which unfortunately didn’t happen until he was killed. The prejudice and ‘beast’ within everyone is how situations like this end up with others being hurt. It is fairly straightforward to panic and take the effortless way out of unfamiliar situations; However, if people were to work together and keep conditions stable, anything as miraculous as being rescued off a desert island can be accomplished.
It's not ment to be in any specific format, but i have to include at least 2 quotes in each paragraph and it has to

Open Question: Why am I short of breath?
Hey
I play division 1 lacrosse and have been working out with some of the best trainers in athletics today, and I've always found that i feel short of breath. I run a 4.55 40, but after I can barely breath, while everyone else is pretty much fine. And its been like this my entire life, since middle school, and high school, now into college. I've had an allergy battery done before and they did a test on my lung capacity to check for asthma and the doctor didnt say anything to me about the results of that because my other dust allergy possibly dwarfed it? My allergic reactions require hospitaliztion but never affect my breathing. Overall i just want to know why if I've been training with professional athletes and trainers, running 6 days a week, and overall just a healthy human, why do i have short breath?
Thanks.
ps I've had like 5 cigars in my life just to celebrate things and don't smoke or drink. I also herniated a disc in my back and went to therapy for sometime if that means anything.

Resolved Question: Can I re-enter the Air Force?
I was in during basic made it to the 3rd week, and they diagnosed me with asthma. I do not have asthma, and I was given a Entry level separation. Is it possible since this was back in 2002 that I can re join. I really want to get back in, and I think enough time has passed. I have been cleared since 2002 from a civilian doctor, they told me I never had it in the first place and I failed probably since I was getting over a cold. Is it even possible or am I screwed. If anyone knows, it would be helpful. Thanks.
Open Question: How would you feel about her?
There's a young woman you teach with who is very quiet and soft-spoken. She will talk to you if you initiate conversations, but other than that she keeps to herself and works. She's also been struggling with her health the past year, was in the hospital for asthma a few times and is trying to get answers from the doctors. She opens up to you when you check up on her, so you asked her if she's always been soft-spoken. She replied "Yeah...I've always been very shy....but I'm working on it."
After hearing this, how would u feel about her?

Open Question: Does anyone know why it hurts when I breathe?
This doesn't happen every time I inhale, only two or three times a day, twice a week.
However, when I inhale, around where my heart is it hurts really bad and I feel something shift and kinda go inward. After that one sharp pain, it all stops, but it hurts a lot and I am concerned. I have no medical conditions or a history or anything, and no asthma.
Any ideas?

Open Question: Upper right side pain in chest...?
i have been experiencing pain in the upper right side of my chest. It doesn't hurt when i breath normally, but when i inhale deeply, cough, laugh, or have the hiccups it hurts. When i do any of those, my chest feels tight and it hurts a lot. Could I have asthma?
Open Question: [Instant] panic attack treatment?
Just a heads up, i do not want answers that say "i dont know" "thanks for the 2 points" OR "ask a doctor". I will ask one later, but this was a random question that poped into my head, and thought i'd ask on here, just to see if anyone knows the answer. just a warning, i will report anyone who doesnt give a real answer.
My question is... Does anybody know if there is any type of [legal] drug out there, that can be taken only minutes before a panic attack, and prevent it? I dont like taking medication daily, so really, I'm just curious if there is anything out there, that can be taken "as needed", yet still be effective in a short amount of time. like... i feel one coming on, i pop a pill down, and then im good to go... lol.
Basically, similiar to how people with asthma, have an inhaler. is there anything related to that for panic attacks?
Thanks in advance for all ur help.
Open Question: do i have exercise-induced asthma?
today during P.E., while we were running, only two minutes into our run all of a sudden i started coughing a little, because of how cold the air was when i started breathing through my mouth. i couldn't stop coughing, and then it started getting harder and harder to breathe, like there was no air to breathe or like half of the air i was getting was not useful at all. i started getting dizzy and there were pains on the right side of my chest. i finished running and was really weak; when i went to get water it almost stung when it went down. it took almost 15-20 minutes to catch my breath. i've been really weak ever since and have still been coughing, and it's almost 9pm.
my family doenst have a history of asthma or any respiratory problems that i know of, but i've had a cold or something similar to it since before christmas - runny nose, cough, sore throat, all that. i'm 13, almost 14.
do i have asthma?

Open Question: How can I loose weight with severe exercise-induced asthma?
I am an 18 year old college student, 5'10" and almost 200lbs now. I would like to loose 40lbs but am having a LOT of difficulty because I cannot exercise like I want to because of my asthma...even too brisk of a walk causes me issues. I've seen my doctor and have medication for it, but I still have difficulty when it comes to exercise. Also, I really don't eat badly...I'm a pseudo-vegetarian (I was veg for a long time but switched back for health reasons) and I eat very diverse, healthy foods with little to no junk. What can I do?

Open Question: My husband doesn't want to hang out with his friends anymore?
Okay, I've been married for 11 years to this great guy. He has 3 really good friends that are more like brothers to him than his own family. They've all known each other for more than 20 years! About a year ago, my husband was diagnosed with asthma, and almost died twice since then. Two of his friends quit smoking with him, and really stuck by him through everything. My husband started working out at the gym all the time, and has made new "gym buddies". He's becoming a health nut! Lately, he doesn't call his old friends, and when they call and ask him to do anything, he always says no. I've asked him why, and he won't really give me a good reason. I understand better than anyone else the health scare, and the lifestyle change, but why let go of such great friends? Should I push the issue, or just let it go?

Resolved Question: Question about enlistment?
I am currently contemplating enlisting in the military. I've heard many things about MEPS and the standards they have for military recruits. I have done many drugs in the past including acid, shrooms, marijuana, x, and various prescription drugs I was not prescribed to. I currently do not do drugs and have not for a few years. I know they can be quite specific when it comes to interrogation. My question is should I even bother trying to be honest if I want a chance to get in? Also, if I do disclose everything will my job be the most limited, uneventful task there is. By the way, I am not even trying the air force. I have not decided on what to. I know three individuals who have lied to get in. Is there something everyone must 'fib' about to get past this perfunctory process or are some just that clean? Whether it be asthma or smoking pot 26 rather than 25 times this whole process seems to be rather counter intuitive.

Open Question: Treating a cold with chest congestion and asthma?
I have mild asthma and recently got a cold. Today my nose isn't stuffed up at all, but I'm coughing a lot, sometimes with clear mucus production.
My family studies teacher told me my chest sounds really congested. When I take my rescue inhaler [Ventolin], it makes the cough sound worse.
I'm on controller medication [FloVent], but don't have instructions to increase my dosage when I get sick--nor do I have an asthma action plan.
Any suggestions what to do about the cough?
btw, it's not a lot of mucus, just a little bit thats being cleared from my lungs by coughing.
Open Question: Best Air Purifier and Vacuum for Dust Control?
I have found that vacuuming my apt results in me having an asthma attack that night when i go to sleep (I'm not even asthmatic except cold or allergy induced) and so I am thinking that it kicks up dust in the air (I believe I am allergic to dust). So I am thinking that I need to get a new, high quality vaccuum and an air purifier or two. Any suggestions? I am looking for replies that reflect some technical knowledge of these types of devices.

Open Question: Emotional Support Animal Dog/Cat. Help? Info?
My brother already has two emotional support cats. I want a dog. I know usually you have to be disabled or have bad health conditions. Does asthma count or IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)? Both conditions make it hard for me to travel, walk/run, or do physical activity. With my IBS I have to eat like every hour to two hours otherwise I end up in tremendous pain. I've had asthma since 7th grade. (I'm almost 18 in my senior year). It would be great to have a companion to comfort me when outside and friends that stay outside, or traveling isn't an option.
