Resolved Question: Moving to California. Questions.?
Ok, so to start off, I am planning to VISIT before I MOVE.
I'm planning to go in april for about 2 weeks to really check everything out. I've had a bajillion friends move back and forth (im currently in Austin, tx) and they say they cannot possibly make up their mind which they like best. I wouldn't plan to move for about a year.
So my questions to you are the following.
-Ive been searching around for apartments, and i can afford up to 1500 a month. I'm not so particular as to what part of LA im close to, but i'd like to be in the general vicinity. I've done endless research about korea town, and it seems like the best fit for me. So, my question is, SPECIFICALLY which are the best parts of koreatown, and what are the -/+ things i can expect to experience there.
-What type of entertainment/sight seeing is around that area that would be wise for me to check out on my visit?
-Would you recommend any other parts of LA generally fitting the genre of koreatown for me to check out?
-What's the average utility bill in apartments in that area
-Are pets commonly or uncommonly allowed in the apartments?
-What tattoo shops are in the area (my boyfriend is a tattoo artist, so he will be looking for a shop)
-What public trans. is available in the area?
I'm just looking for a busy, city environment with endless things to do at all hours of the night. Loud isn't a problem. I live downtown austin right now.
Any input would be appreciated!
Thanks a bunch!

Resolved Question: What plants winter well in Austin, TX?
I just moved to Austin, TX. I'd like to put some potted plants outside of my apartment. They will get lots of morning sun. Any suggestions on what plants will winter well outside? I'd like to have some geraniums, but don't know if they will stand the cold. Also, what about herbs?
Resolved Question: What to expect living with a Wiccan?
My health has taken a turn for the worse in recent months, so my daughter (33) has taken away my taxi cab and packed up my apartment. I guess I'm going to live with her, down in Austin, Tx., when I'm well enough the leave the hospital.
Though I have not asked her about it recently, last year she said she was a Wiccan. What should I expect it to be like living there? I don't want to disrupt her life any more than necessary, though she says I won't be. She just wants to get me healthy.
I did tell her that if she does I may want to find a younger woman to have more children with. She was not amused.
Resolved Question: We're moving to Austin,TX soon. What's the best way for me to get information about cost of living?
Also housing,good/bad areas to live, schooling, etc. My husband needs a job;he can work construction,(his current job is working a front-end loader for an asphalt crushing/recycling business). The company he works for is going out of business but has agreed to pay moving expenses wherever we move(my husband decided on Austin because he has family there). We're looking to rent for now and we're not really big on apartment complexes/buildings so what's it like to rent a single family home? Are they all in housing developments or is it possible to just live on a regular street/neighborhood(for lack of a better way to put it?) Do most/all landlords require credit checks/long-term leases? I ask especially about the leases, because where we're living now is a duplex and we're month-to-month. Also,I guess it might depend on each landlord/lady but what's the best way to find out if the rental is pet-friendly(my daughter has a cat)? Would it be better to go through some sort of rental/management company(the few we've dealt with here in Florida are not good)or do it on our own?
Resolved Question: I need a rental house or apartment with no criminal background check. Do realtors do background checks?
I need a rental house or apartment with no criminal background check. Do realtors do background checks? Is there a way I can avoid being subject to such background checks? Resolved Question: Should I move to Austin, Dallas, or Honolulu?
I just got a promotion at my job. I work for an international company that has offices all over the U.S. and the world. As part of my promotion, I have been given a choice of relocating to either Austin, TX or Dallas, TX or Honolulu, HI.
Some background on me: I am female and 25 years old. I’ve lived my entire life in Seattle, WA. I have a college degree. I have never lived alone before. In college I lived with roommates in the dorms. After college I’ve been living in an apartment with one other female roommate. I am single, and I am concerned about living alone in a new city. However, I am also very excited about my promotion and the chance to live in a new city.
I am concerned about the basics such as crime, cost of living, weather, etc. I would like to hear from people who have lived in either Austin, Dallas, or Honolulu.
I like being outdoors, I don’t like traffic, I like city life, and I prefer warm weather. Keeping these in mind, which city do you recommend I relocate to?
Any advice or guidance is appreciated!
Thank you in advance.
Resolved Question: I'm moving into an apartment (in Austin TX, USA) from Phoenix - question about proof of funds..?
I won't have a job when I get down there, and I have an apartment locator looking for an apartment. Since I won't have a job when I first arrive, I should be able to provide a proof of funds letter, or bank statement showing proof of funds instead of proof of employment, correct? I know every complex is different, but roughly how many months of rent do complexes typically ask for? It's a 6-month lease, and I have a solid employment history, good credit, and have never missed a rent payment.. thank you for your reply!!
Resolved Question: What do I do about needless noise complaints from a tenant below me?
Hello-
Last month I moved to Austin, TX from Massachusetts. I am 23 years old and this is the first time I have lived by myself. The reason I am writing this is because the woman below me has already complained 4 times to me about noise I am apparently making. The first time she complained was the very first night I stayed at the apartment. She said that she had been hearing a lot of banging, etc. and asked if I could keep it down. I apologized and explained the I had just moved in and that was probably what she heard. She also explained to me that she is a sngle mother with a young daughter and that she wakes up early everyday, etc. I sympathized and tried to be as quiet as possible.
A few days later she came up to my apartment again (this time well after 10:00 at night). She said that the night before there was a loud noise at 3:00 am which woke up both her and her daughter and apparently she deduced it must have come from me. I explained that I was sound asleep at the time and had no idea what she was talking about. She apologized for bothering me, said it must just be thin floors and went back downstairs.
After this second complaint I made a concentrated effort to be quiet to the point of rearranging my routine and essentially tip-toeing around my apartment. The third complaint was one that really tipped me off that this lady may be a little crazy. I just started culinary school and had an orientation the week before last. I came home from the orientation at 6:00 pm and had been in my apartment about 30 seconds when I got a knock on my door. I opened the door to her 7 or 8 year old daughter telling me they were trying to eat dinner and to please keep it down. Now, of course, I am not going to yell at a little girl and I think the lady knew that therefore sending her daughter to do her bidding. I explained that I had just come home and that I would be as quiet as possible. After this complaint I went to the management office and explained the situation to them as a kind-of head's up. They told me if she complained again to come back and they would do something.
The last straw came today. I have been in school for about two weeks and my classes start at 6:30 in the morning. I therefore wake up at 4:30 M-F. Again, I am as quiet as possible. I came home from school at 9:00 this morning and there was a note on my door for everyone to see (not folded up) from my neighbor. It was in red marker in bold letters stating that this was the second time her and her daughter were waken up at 4 or 5 in the morning (she wakes up at 6:00 god forbid) and that I was being inconsiderate, etc. What made me mad was not only the blatant rudeness of the note but also her assumption that because I am young that I do not wake up early as well and any noise I make must be because I am unaware of others, being inconsiderate, etc.
Sorry for the long explanation but I wanted to get all the details in here. After the note I went down to the office again and explained what had happened. They said that they would call her and explain my side and also see where she thinks the noise is coming from, at what times, etc. and let me know.
This issue is seriously stressing me out to the point where I worry everytime I walk around, or do any normal activivity of daily life. I also am worried because as of yet I have not ahd anybody over because I am still new to the area. What happens when I make friends and want to have some people over (reasonably of course) or I have friends visit me? I also am a bartender and when I do find a job I will probably be coming home pretty late on some nights and she probably will complain about that too.
Has anyone been in this same situation? What can I do? I don't know if I trust the management to take care of this. Also, I want to say that I have lived in apartments before and have been on the receiving end of noise so I do sympathize. However, I also understoo that unless it was excessive (loud music/tv, moving furniture, yelling, etc.) there was nothing I could do.
HELP!!!!

Resolved Question: What type of Lawyer do i need?
My apartment lease has ended recently. My original roommate and I were the only people on the lease. My roommate and I both left the apartment in december to pursue interests in other cities. My roommate invited a friend, Dan, to live in the apartment while he was not there. This was unofficial, and unknown to the office. The person that moved in apparently invited another person, Steve, to live in the apartment. Eventually Dan moved out and left the apartment to Steve. Come to find out, Steve invited many others to stay in the apartment. When the lease ended, the office said that Steve along with about 6 others were still in the apartment. Police were called in order to get them to leave the apartment. I have now found out that before they left they demolished doors, threw paint all over the carpet, grafittied the walls, counters, appliances and fixtures.
What type of Lawyer would I need to contact for my case?

I plan on moving to Austin in about a year or so. I've been doing some looking around and the soco area appears to be a pretty cool place. Do you know of any other cool areas to live?
Resolved Question: Moving questions?
My fiancee (soon-to-be-wife) and I are moving from Minneapolis MN to Austin TX in September. We would prefer that the move not cost more than $2500. We live in a 2 bedroom apartment, and will probably be paring down our stuff to move into a 1 br. But we have the usual, 37" LCD TV, sofa, boxes full of wedding/kitchen gifts, closets full of clothes, etc. Can we hire any commercial movers to do this for $2500? We've looked into organizations like "Nationwide Relocation Services" but they appear to mostly be scams.
Does anyone have GOOD experience with Nationwide Relocation Service or American Van Lines (Not NORTH American Van Lines)? Or should we just get a U-Haul?

Resolved Question: How will losing our homestead exemption effect our payments?
My husband and I own a home outside of Austin, TX and are going to be moving out of that home and renting an apartment in Dallas. We have decided to rent the house to my parents but I am wondering how losing the homestead exemption will effect our taxes or mortgage payment. Will our payment go up or will we owe money at the end of the year? The house is worth about $130,000. I guess I'm just not sure how the homestead exemption works. Thanks for any help you can give!
I will have to check when I get home but my husband said he thinks our homestead exemption was $3000. Does that sound right? Our payments would go up $250 a month???

Resolved Question: Best zip codes in Austin, TX?
I'm flying to Austin on Thursday to find an apartment. Despite my repeated attempts to tell realtors I am interested in South Austin, they are sending me lots of properties in the 78759 zip code, which seems pretty far north. Can any local Austinites give me some advice? Is this area worth looking into? What are your recommendations? Are there any areas I should avoid?
Crouching Doggie, are you recommending 78704 or advising against it? I am in Austin now and think I've found the perfect apartment, in---you guessed it---78704.

Resolved Question: Looking for the best dog for me in an apartment?
I live in an apartment in Austin, TX so I figure a short haired dog would feel the most comfortable. I also want a medium to large size dog because small dogs just aren't my thing. Some online tests say a Basset Hound would be good for me but I'd really like a lean hound dog like an American Foxhound or something of the sort. I will be working full time so I will need to keep the dog gated in the kitchen until he/she is completly house trained during the day. I am active at night, fortunately Austin is very pet friendly so the dog will be out just as much as I. What bread do you all suggest would be the best fit for me?
Resolved Question: German Shepherd friendly apartments in Austin, TX?
I'm planning on moving to Austin in April and my boyfriend wants to bring his mother's german shepherd with us since it doesn't get enough attention at his mom's. I understand that most businesses consider this breed one of the top 10 aggressive breeds. (Owners make the dogs aggressive people!) But this is the sweetest, calmest dog. I'd love to have him with us as a companion. Does anyone know any apartments or rental homes that would accept this?

OK, Im about to go into a long story....dec 23, 2006 I was at a friends apartment on campus @ St. Edwards in Austin, TX and the cops busted us, but we weren't being oud or anything. Just friends hangin out. Well I got a ticket.....i guess....1 friend went to jail for providing to minors (me, 19 at the time). The thing is it was campus police who gave us the ticket, not DPS. I tried to call the judge numerous times and left messeges and my phone number and no one ever contacted me. Resolved Question: I'm looking to trim my comic book collection. Are there any charities that will take old comics?
My apartment is running out of space, and those longboxes full of comics will need to go sometime. I'd rather give them away then throw them out, so I'm looking for a charity that will take them.
I'd prefer that some kids get the chance to enjoy them as much as I did. I don't think any of them are worth anything, so selling them is probably out.
I live in Austin, TX if that makes a difference.
Voting Question: What area of Austin,TX should a young college graduate live in?
I just recently graduated from college and I am moving to Austin for my first job. I am really confused as to what areas to look into for an apartment rent. I would like a rather young community (or at least not all middle aged people with kids) close to downtown and all the food, bars, entretainment, shopping etc. I will work in Round Rock so an acceptable commute would be a plus. I am willing to pay up to $1000 for a 1 bedroom but I am also looking at finding roomates if possible. Any help would be great!
Resolved Question: Does anybody know where I might be able to buy any signs from the Pittsburgh area?
Things like street signs, bus stop signs, stores or restaurants unique to Pittsburgh signs (Eat N Park, PNC Park, Heinz Field, Kennywood Park, Horne's Department Stores, etc), hospital signs.....whatever. These signs have to be small enough to display in my apartment and they can be replicas or originals (just so long as they are not stolen or I'm not breaking any laws by purchasing them). I'm a Pittsburgh native now living in Austin, Tx and I'm looking for things to decorate a "Pittsburgh Room" in my apartment.
I'm primarily looking for stuff I can get online
