  • Open Question: Infant with a Dark Gray BM?
My 5 month old has been kind of fussy today, and refusing to nap. I changed her diaper a moment ago and her stool was thick, like paste...and dark gray in color. It has never been like that before. She does not have a fever. She is on formula/breastmilk combo, and also eats some baby food. What could this be?

Our baby is 7 weeks old and until recently we used infacol which didnt really help with wind so we thought we would try gripe water. It only says on the bottle to give a 5ml spoonful. Can that be mixed in with the formula or do you have to use a spoon or syringe?
  • Open Question: why do some mothers claim to have a better bond while breatfeeding?
i breastfeed my son.. but i don't feel any special connection with him (other than the normal, mother-baby relationship) i pump sometimes and give him the bottle, and i feel the same was as when i breastfeed him.. i have given him formula before and i still felt the same way. i choose to breastfeed so i don't have to wash so much bottles and because its better and healthier for my son, i will stop when he is about 6 months, maybe sooner and exclusively pump.. i'm not sure yet. i just don't want to breastfeed a big baby.. i but why do some mothers claim to have this special bond, from exclusively breastfeeding, and why do some mothers still breastfeed after a year, when their child can drink cows milk, and no longer NEEDS breast milk? some insight would help.. -- i asked this once, but it didn't post-- but when i pump, why do i get kind of jealous when others want to feed my baby.. besides his father. is that weird?
  • Open Question: Asked this once and it didn't post (why is my daughter not breastfeeding?)?
My daughter has been mainly breastfed since she was 5 weeks old (and she is now almost 9 weeks old). She sometimes supplement with formula when I wasn't able to produce enough to fill her up. I'm 5 weeks pregnant today (and yes I did get pregnant when my daughter was a month old) and I read an article on breastfeeding while pregnant. In it, it said that some babies will self wean themselves because the milk tastes bad or whatever (I don't think it specified). My grandmother watches my daughter and she said she ate every 3 ish hours like normal but only took like 4 ounces every feeding where she usually does almost 8 or so. When I got home and fed her because she was hungry she was on my breast for about 2 or so minutes but wouldn't feed. So I made her an 8 ounce bottle and she drank 6 of it. Could she be self weaning like the article said? Article if you want to check it out: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/breast-...
  • Open Question: coughing while having the formula and pediatrician?
hello, i am a mom of two weeks baby boy. he is been on formula and nursery water. everytime when he is hungry, i give him the bottle, but he will jump on the nipple as if he has never had any food. then he will suck so fast, that often times i take it out to make sure the milk gets into his body, but despite of doing this, he will cough in between..is it common? also, is this something to be concerned about. i also had another question, i have this pediatrician, he has been around for a while (close to 30 years of experience) and there are a couple of instances where i had to call him, and he just says don't worry about it..don't worry about it. but since this is my first baby, i need an explanation to better understand the problem. is this common for doctors to reply like this with no explanation. what do you feel about it?
  • Open Question: Breastfeeding starting at 3rd month?
This is about my friend (who is from other country and doesnt speak English). She had a baby 3 months back and due to her health problems she could not breastfeed her baby. Now the doctor says she can do it as her health is clear. She tried to express milk but could not get except few drops from each breast. She started taking fenugreek and trying pumping every 3-4 hrs. Her son wont latch and likes formula. She tried different methods like supplemental nursing system, nipple sheild etc. but no use. Her question is as she could not feed her baby even once during last 3 months, is there a possibility to get milk expressed again. She is really desperate to nurse her baby atleast by breastmilk in bottle.
  • Open Question: What do you feed your baby right after delivery if there is no milk?
They told me you can feed colostrum and that's it. Can their hunger go away just with colostrum?? What if I dont even have colostrum? I want to breastfeed my baby and wouldn't want her to get used to formulas. Right now I squeeze the nipples and I do get a weird thick clear substance. But just drops come out. Does it get more abundant at birth?

  • Open Question: Breastfeeding and Formula Feeding?
I am now back to work after my maternity leave. I cannot pump/produce enough milk for my baby at daycare. I work 8:30-5:00 with daycare next door. I have a 40 min drive to work. She feeds at 6:30am, i pump at 10:00, I feed her at lunch 12:30, and feed her at 6:00 when we get home. My one time pumping isnt sufficient for the next day. I am wondering if I could breastfeed early morning, evenings and weekends while daycare gives formula. How would i transition this decision so i wont have sore/full breasts at work?

  • Open Question: Feeding schedule 5 1/2 month old?
I am a first time mum just looking for some advice! I have a 5 1/2 month old boy. He has always been a hungry baby and is a big boy! I recently introduced cereal just a small amount in the morning and in addition he was taking 5 7-8oz bottles a day, sleeping right through the night! However this week he is still taking his cereal but stopping at around 4-5 oz into his bottle - he gets pretty cranky pursing his lips and shaking his head like he really does not want it!? Should I encourage him to take more? Has he had enough? It seems like a big jump down? Should I stop solids? Should I introduce more solids in place of the formula? Any advice much appreciated!
  • Open Question: Should I wean my 4 month old breastfed baby or do you have advise on these issues?
I wanted to nurse my little boy until he was AT LEAST 6 months but it's getting so difficult on me. At night he has rejected his pacifier and has decided that he want's to use my breast as one. He will wake up and cry until I give him the breast, suckle until he gets a drink and then falls to sleep with it in his mouth. If I take him from him he crys. And I am so so so sore from this not to mention tired!! My sister said that I should wean but I'm unsure.. My hubby would like him to take more formula so he can do some feeding as well. I need a solution!! Please give me your advice! polishprincess........... Why would I come here looking for an excuse to wean? Do I need an excuse, it's my decision. I don't want to wean, I just want advise from other breastfeeding mothers, which I don't think you are. Keevelish..... You need to reread the details because your answer doesn't fit my problem... DUH he's going to eat at night that's not the problem..

  • Open Question: Switching from concentrated formula to powder - anyone familiar with the different kinds of powdered?
We tried the powder of the same brand of liquid concentrate (Enfamil A+) and it was disgusting. It was so different from the concentrate! It smelled and tasted so bad, and my baby would refuse the bottle at first, that I stopped using it and went back to concentrate. Is there any kind of powdered formula that doesn't smell and taste bad or are they all going to be the same? Thanks.
  • Open Question: when did you stop boiling water for your baby to drink?
for use in a sippy cup or mixing with cereal or the occaisional (very infrequent) bottle of formula? My son is breastfed plus lots of solids. He's 9 months old. I tried this past week to give him just filtered water in his sippy cup and for mixing with his oatmeal, but he had very soft poop which almost squished out the sides of his diaper (hasn't happened since he had solid food). Do some babies still need sterilized water at this age? Or maybe there is another reason for the crazy diapers.
  • Open Question: My baby seems uncomfortable and passes a lot of wind?
My little girl is 8 weeks old and it seems that the lat 2-3 days she is really passing a lot of wind (farting). She seems quite uncomfortable and i'm worried about her. I came over from NZ 2 weeks ago to the UK and had to change her formula so I am wondering if it is that as she has also had runny poo for the last few days as well. The thing is I have had a sickness bug and so it may be that and not the formula change - but that doesn't explain the constant farting!! I'm not sure whether to leave her on this formula for another week and see how we go or to change it - I dont want to upset her again by changing the formula. I am giving her drops in the milk for colic but it doesn't really seem to be helping. Has anyone else got any ideas on how I can deal with this? She doesn;t have a problem getting her wind up after a feed either. And yes I will take her back to the Doctors if it continues b4 anyone decides to suggest that!!! I would just like to know if anyone can offer any good advice. Much appreciated x
  • Open Question: two-weeks old - threw up and question on pacifier?
hello all, i posted a question about my infant about several hours ago and got some good information from you all. thank you for that. my baby threw up once around 11:30, cried badly, and then went to sleep. is that a cause for concern for babies to throw up and what would cause it to happen. he did take his two feeds with formula and nursery water again, but seems to be doing fine. one time during his feed, we tried to give him the pacifier, he sucked it on for a few minutes and then he ended up spitting up the milk (not a lot). is it good for babies to use pacifier and also, do you know which pacifiers are really better. i meant to say after the baby had the milk, we gave him pacifier for a few minutes to get him to sleep..not in between the feeding.

You know, there's always the controversial questions about formula feeding, cicumcison, teen mums etc - and there is usually some very strong opinions coming from either side. My question is, what's the question in this section that really sets YOU off, the one that you're usually jumping up to answer? For example - I know MANY out there disagree with me, but my 'high horse' answers are to the questions about putting baby food in the bottle, and feeding babys' food at young ages.

  • Resolved Question: How do I tell her without upsetting her?
I recently have new neighbors that moved in and asked me to watch her daughter. I agreed to do so during the day while she works as I stay home with my daughter anyway. So today was the first day I watched my neighbors baby who is 7 months old. She told me the baby was formula fed but when she arrived she told me her food was in the diaper bag..so as the baby was crying for a bottle I opened the bag to find cookies, cheetos, and soda! Yes, I said SODA! She expected me to feed this poor 7 month old baby these things throughout the day..so I called my husband to bring me a can of formula and I gave her that instead..when my neighbor came to pick up her daughter she asked why she didn't drink the soda and junk food I told her I forgot it was in there..I didn't want to upset her but I don't even feed my 1 yr old that junk. So my question is..how can I politely tell her that this is not good for her baby without upsetting her? I don't know her all that well and I don't want to continue to watch her if she parents the way she does..and I don't want to have to keep buying the kid formula because her mom is to ignorant and would rather give her soda...suggestions are helpful! Thanks. Oh, also I forgot to add she didn't even pack her diapers..I had to use my own for her..I feel bad for the kid but are people really that ignorant??!? The thing is..I don't want to keep spending my money on her diapers and formula..I have my own daughter to raise..these things aren't exactly cheap.. Shes paying me 150.00 a week..she works 6 days a week 12 hrs per day..so either way you look at it I am still cheaper then daycare would be and in daycare she still has to provide her daughter with diapers and food..
  • Open Question: Questions regarding feeding a 9 month old.?
Hi, my daughter is 9 months old now and I am just wondering what types of food I can try her on. She experiments with finger foods such as -Boiled apple or pear (so it is soft) -baby hand sized bits of banana (usually 3 bits on her high chair try so she can pick up herself) -Toast (what sort of topping can I use, could I use marmite?). - bread - white chocolate buttons (A rare treat and good for teaching her to use her fingers) -Baby friend buiscuits (I.e rusks, rich tea, heinz biscotti) What other sorts of finger food could I try, fruit and veg wise. What recipies can I use for dinners/puddings. Also she drinks around 21 oz milk a day, which is cow and gate premium + 7oz of baby bed time milk. I was thinking on trying follow on formula, are they worth it? Are they good? How could I go about switching. Thanks.
  • Open Question: Prescribed antibiotic that says may be harmful to baby when breastfeeding...?

  • Open Question: My 6 month is very sick, I dont think they did enough..do you?
My poor baby. I took her to the doctor yesterday and he said she had bronchitis. She was very cranky, had a meaty cough and was wheezing. I brought her home and she refused to take any of her medication. When I say refuse I mean she would vomit and gag continuously. I called the Dr and they said to take her to the ER. I brought her in and her oxygen level was low. They gave her a breathing treatment. She would not drink anything. She could not keep down formula or pedialyte. They took Xrays ruling out Pneumonia, thank god but she was still gagging and vomiting the whole time we were there. I wanted them to do something, make her feel comfortable and they sent us home. Today I brought her to her Dr and she lost almost a full pound. I feel as if they did not do enough. Would you feel the same or am I just being a paranoid, first time mother?
  • Open Question: breastfeeding. baby not getting enough?? ?
My son is 2 weeks and 5 days old and it seems like all he ever wants is to be nursing. Everyone I talk to has a different opinion.. his doctor told me to only let him nurse on each side for 15 minutes because after that he is just sucking for comfort.. the nurses at the baby weighing station tell me to let him eat as much as he wants.no matter how much that may be. Sometimes he will be on the boob for hours!! He is gaining weight okay and he is having plenty of wet and dirty diapers but I dont see how I even have enough milk for him to be on the boob for over an hour at a time? I dont know what to do because we never get any sleep.. he will suck and then eventually pull off and be "asleep" so I put him down in his crib and he starts crying again and nothing helps except giving him the boob. I just dont see how he can be so hungry.. am I not producing enough milk to fill him up? The only time he falls asleep is when he has been awake for hours and hours and is truley exhausted and eventually goes to sleep. I dont know if I should try formula or what? Please help. Sorry this is so long. I'm sorry..I should have mentioned..he does have a pacifier..but most off the time, after active sucking and I take him off and try to offer the bink he doesnt want it and just wants to be back on me. I dont want him to sleep with me but I just dont know what to do. he always seems hungry but maybe he just always wants to actually be on me and I dont know what to do about that either.
  • Open Question: What is the matter with me?
Okay this is a weird question... I had my baby on October 3rd... Vaginally... I had an episiotomy and everything went well... I am breast feeding but when the baby was 3 weeks old she got pneumonia and had to be in the hospital for a week so I started alternating between breast milk and formula... She gets about one bottle a day at the most... Well I had my period the following month, and it lasted about ten days... Then I had it again in December, lasting 7 days, and again lasting 5 days... Every month it seems to be moving back 4 days or so... I always had a perfect period every 28 days for 3 days... Before I had my daughter... Well my last cycle started on the 29th of December, my husband came home on leave (He's in the military) and we had unprotected sex... Not that I'd be upset if I were pregnant... It's a great thing, we feel it will happen when the time is right.. But anyhow... I started cramping on Tuesday pretty bad, what I thought were ovulation cramps... But today I woke up in horrible pain again, just like period cramps... I'm not sure if this could be in plantation cramping, or what... Any advice? Think I may be expecting again?
  • Open Question: 1 breast has WAY more milk. How do I even it out? ?
I have been back to work full time for 2 weeks now and Ive really noticed that one breast has way more milk than the other. I can usually get 3-5 oz out of the left and only 1-2 out of the right. I've tried pumping on that side for 10 mins longer than the other. I've tried having baby suckle that one at night as a pacifier hoping that it would produce more with more sucking. I use a rental Medela Symphony that's hospital grade and I've tried switching the sheilds and all so it's not the pump being stronger on one side. It's noticeable that the right doesn't fill like the left. THe left will even get to the point of engorged, but not the right. Is this normal and does anyone have any suggestions? I'm pumping every 3 hours at work which is all I can really do and still get work done. But I'm not producing enough for my baby at the sitter. She's being supplemented with formula for those 2 bottles at the end of the day. I would really like to keep her on strictly milk especially since she was just diagnosed with reflux and milk is better in coping for her. Any suggestions welcome! THanks! I can't let her starve when I'm not with her and I have a double electric pump I do both at the same time then keep it on the right for 10 mins after they stop dripping.
  • Open Question: My 10 mos. old doesn't want to eat?
My 10 mos. old baby has been really fussy this week and is flipping out at meal times. She cries, keeps her mouth tightly closed, and swats at the spoon or pulls her hair when I try to feed her. Her formula intake is also low, like 2 ounces of every usually 6 oz. bottle. I took her to the pediatrician and her ears, throat, everything is fine. They gave me the generic "teething" answer, but she has 4 teeth and has never refused food (she loves to eat). I have also given orajel, teething tablets, and tylenol and they do not seem to help the eating situation. A friend suggested that maybe she was ready for table food, so I tried offering only finger foods and she flings them on the floor. I am at my wit's end! I manage to get about half a jar a feeding through some crazy distraction, but that only gets me so far. Any suggestions? Thanks so much!
  • Open Question: Is my 1 year old lactose intolerant -- Experiences from others with lactose intolerant babies?
My daughter turned 1 years old on Dec 6 and ever since she then I have been giving her whole cows milk and seems like ever since the switch she has had this choking-like cough ---- oddly enough it's only when she drinks milk not juice, water, etc I usually pat her on the back to relieve her until it's calmed down and that works but it is a concern --- and she has vomited the milk about 4 times since in the month period of starting milk in Dec and now ---- I've called her dr and she said she could be allergic or be lactose intolerant and to try lactrose free milk which I will beginning today but I just wanted to know if others experienced something similar and if the switch helped? FYI She didn't have this choking-like cough with the formula and she is not sick
  • Open Question: Questions about how to wean baby from bottle and cows milk?!?
My son is 10 months old and I know in a few months the bottle is supposed to come to an end. He loves his bottle... he rather have his bottle than foods... I have tried introducing a sippy cup but he takes a few sips (I have to hold it) and then thats it... any suggestions? At a year old did you just put milk in the bottle? Or sippy cup? Did you stop formula all together? How much milk did your little one drink? I just worry he won't get enough nutrients if he isn't eating a ton of baby food and just drinking milk... so any advice would be great! Jellybean- he LOVES a regular cup and knows how to drink out of it (if I hold the cup)

When my daughter was first born her doctor said to feed her every 2-3 hours... Then when she got a little older like at 3 weeks she said its ok to feed her every 3-4 hours... • Resolved Question: What to do with unused baby formula?
While I was pregnant my cousin gave me about 10 can's of unopened, unused, up to date baby formula. Her son was very allergic and was constantly switching back and fourth between formulas. She gave them to me in case I had the same problem. Anyway, I don't need them and I don't want to just throw them away. Formula is too expensive to waste like that! I am not sure if she got them from WIC or is she actually bought them herself. Do you think WIC might take them? I really don't want to waste them. They are Similac Alimentum (hypoallergenic). Ahhh, Craigslist...never thought of that! Sophie's mommy, you should have donated them to me =) LOL.

  • Resolved Question: How long is this "period" going to last?
My baby is 11 weeks old. I had a c-section with her. I bled for about two weeks afterwards then it stopped. I was breastfeeding her also. Now I am getting ready to start a new job and have been slowing weening her onto formula. I got my period on Monday and its still really heavy (today is Thursday). How long is it going to last? When I got my period before I got pregnant it was only heavy for about two days then would slowy taper off. Is it normal for the first "real" one after birth to be heavy longer than normal? I haven't had any cramps or headaches like I used to get when I got it. I'm confused...
  • Open Question: My best friend's wife smokes marijuana medicinally while she is breast feeding.?
I say she should switch to formula, but she doesn't believe it is doing any harm. Is there any concrete evidence to what type of effect this has on the baby? This is a serious question, so please only informative answers. Thank you. Please note this is not a fetus or pregnant woman. The baby is born and nursing.
  • Resolved Question: Weaning while breastfeeding.?
I'm sorry if I seem a bit slow lol. My son will be 6 months the beginning of march and I have to (for financial reasons not choice!) go back to work in May. I want to breastfeed till 6 months at least. I'm a bit confused as to how I introduce solid foods while still breastfeeding. Do you feed first then solid after? How often? Do you think I should switch to formula as I'm going back to work? Is there other fluid I offer at 6 months that replace milk feeds? I know its a while yet, but I'm trying to get my head around it before hand so I know what I'm doing. No-one in my family has breastfed as long as me and I'm already being pressured into trying baby rice(not doing it though). So, I've no-one to ask, plus my Health Visitor is pants! Any advice would be really helpful!
  • Open Question: Best Formula For Breast Fed Baby?
My milk supply is not keeping up with my six and a half month old son......I've been trying to hard to keep up and I just don't think I am. At his six month check-up his growth was not what it should be, and i can't help but think he is not getting enough milk even though he doesn't act hungry. Right now he takes a five ounce bottle of breast milk along with solids while at his childcare provider. I think he needs two, and since I can't get enough milk supply to do that, I'm going have him drink one bottle of formula. I plan to keep everything else the same, nursing when he's with me, and keep sending five ounces of breast milk with him. Has anyone done something similar? How were your results? What did you find was the best formula for your little one? He has no spitting up problems or anything. Thanks in advance! I referenced kellymom.com for breast fed baby weight gain. The low end for 4-6 month olds was 3.25 ounces a week, and he averaged 2.22 ounces week between check-ups.
