Open Question: If someone offers to help with your baby shower, should you expect them to pay for it?
Sorry if this is very long, but I wanted to make sure everyone got a bit of an understanding of what I’m going through. I am a first time mom, so all this is very new to me. My sister and sister-in-law (brother's sister) were asking me about having a baby shower and I asked them if they would want to help. I'm not sure if this is where the confusion started since I asked them if they 'wanted to help' versus 'wanting to throw me a shower'. They both have 2 children, so I figured they would know how things work. I assumed from the beginning that I was supposed to be paying for everything. They never told me any different. They offered to help pay for some things and I was very grateful. However, EVERYONE was asking me why I was paying anything towards my own baby shower when I started talking about budgeting for it. At one point, my sister even told me that she didn't think I understood how showers work and that I was supposed to sit back and let them handle everything. She said 'let us handle this, we're the ones that have done this before'. So, they basically wanted me to sit back and let them plan everything at mostly my expense. I didn't know any better. I didn’t know that in their eyes a baby shower was white linens and catered food with little or no games or decorations. They were talking about taste testing the caterer foods and one of them even spent $90 on lotions, soaps, and little prize gifts for the 25-30 people I wanted to invite (after I mentioned I wanted to have games). I had no idea they thought a baby shower was this way or that they would spend that kind of money just on gifts for the guests. They paid for the lotions, prize gifts, and cake, so I didn't complain. As least not yet. But every idea I had, they disagreed with. They even stepped on my toes and almost screwed the FREE facility I was able to work out for the place to have the party. Finally, I asked them as nicely as I could about the fact that people were saying I'm not supposed to pay for my shower. They, of course, were quick to say they couldn't pay for everything because of the economy, etc. And, that they could only put in about $150 each, which they had already spent most of just on the lotions, gift prizes, and a cake. They even said that both of them paid for their baby showers themselves and that they thought I was crazy to think they would be able to pay for everything. (I found out later that each of them had TWO baby showers, with at least one of the showers totally funded by someone else). Personally, I was thinking of a cheap cake and some cute cheap party favors for less than $50. Maybe, I'm missing something. Hey, I understand that the economy is bad, so I gave them the option to walk away. They didn't want to. So, now I'm forced to look like the bad guy and only allow them to make decisions based on what they are willing to pay for. I can't afford to throw my own baby shower on their champagne taste. They even asked me if I could ask my husband's side of the family to help financially with the baby shower. I refused. I do not think it is my place to ask people for money for my shower. I felt bad enough having to have this conversation with THEM about money. They couldn’t understand that I saw no point in throwing a shower if the cost of the shower was going to be the same or more than the cost of the gifts I would receive. I get the feeling they are more about the ‘look at me’ factor than the actual purpose of having a baby shower. I actually would love to just cancel it and buy the baby stuff myself, but I'm trying to not kill my relationship with my sisters totally. So, I figured if I have to pay for the food and make the crafty items, I shouldn't have to run it by them. I don't have the $400 or more for just the food that they were originally planning for. If I spent that on food, I couldn’t buy the plates to put the food on!!! In my mind, when I thought I was supposed to be paying for it, I was only wanting to spend $300 AT THE MOST to throw the entire party. Does anyone think I'm being too mean? What would you do in this situation?

Open Question: i know it's kinda gross but...?
I am 35 weeks pregnant...so i'm just waiting for like any little sign that i could have my baby. I'm probably making it a bigger deal than necessary...but it's my first and thats just how most first time mom's are...anyways...so i read that when your water breaks sometimes it doesn't like just completely come out like a waterfall or anything...but sometimes there is just a little tear and it just slowly leaks out or whatever. well i just got out of the shower and there was a little bit of clear fluid that came out. I'm not sure what to think of it though. it's not like a steady flow or anything it was just a little gush of clear fluid and it happened twice in like 5 minutes or so...so what could it be? is that normal or is it possible that my water might break or be broken and just leaking slowly or what. i have no idea. just curious. thank you! no i haven't lost my mucus plug...but i was told that it doesn't matter what order it comes in...

Open Question: Sudden Fear of Bathing in my 2.5 year old? Any suggestions?
My son was always a water baby and loved taking half hour baths and then even kicking me out of my showers so he could stand in it by himself. For the past 2 months or so though he just does not want to take a bath or shower period. The only solution I had was to get in the bath tub first and then he'd be okay in there. Now, however, he'll come in the bath ONLY if I hold him the entire time on my lap. He freaks out if his feet touch the bottom of the tub. Most of the time, I refuse to let him in the shower with me now (he only wants in after I've been in there for 10-15 minutes), b/c I'm 8 months pregnant and I just can't hold my 35 lb angel while in there. However, after I'm done showering I'll stay in there and have him come in. I put his potty chair in there and he sits on it while the water hits his feet. This only works once a week though. Needless to say that is getting a bit difficult (even the bathing) and I was wondering if anyone else has advice. I have NO idea what brought this on. He never had an underwater issue in the tub or pool. I don't think he's ever had a bath without me in the room so I'm really confused since this came on. I can't imagine it's a separation issue b/c he's fine with baby sitters twice a month, and we even say bye. Naturally, I've never left him in there by himself. I know someone will say something about abuse, but that is NOT the case. He is very well loved, and he knows it. With everything else he is super confident and he's a really sweet and well behaved 2 year old. It breaks my heart to see him freak out like this though, but I can't continue doing this. It's just physically getting too hard. I'm just really confused. He still likes to play in the sink and if he's sitting on my lap he's very happy in the tub. Also, during vacation we went swimming and he was okay with that. Any ideas or suggestions? My hubby is great, but realistically he's not going to be bathing my son every night for me. They make registries for Weddings and Baby Showers, why not make Registries for Kid's Birthdays? I am sure there are plenty of things a 5 yr. old would like to put on their registry .. why not have a Birthday Registry for kids? Kids have parties and people bring random gifts .. why not have a registry so the child can pick and choose the things they want? That'd be great for someone shopping for a kid when they have no idea what things kids are into these days .. I'm planning a baby shower for my best friend. She told me awhile back that she's uncomfortable with the idea of everyone staring at her while she opens presents. I was trying to think of a way that we could avoid the official everyone-watch-Jane-open-presents part, but can't think of a polite way to do so. Is there no way around it? Ellen- yeah, that's what I was thinking- that watching her open the gifts IS part of the basic idea. But then again, I've been to some showers where people have said that that's the boring part. Especially when there are a lot of gifts. Another idea I just had was maybe to have her open each person's gift as they arrive....that way the guest can see her open it, but it's kind of casual at the same time. Hi all. I have a few questions regarding the number of baby showers and etiquette. I have 4 people throwing different showers. I feel a little greedy, but they are all separate groups and wanted to throw them for the different groups. I.e. work, friends, family, husband's work. I would combine, but the work ones would not combine well. My husband works in a bar and I work in human services. My family lives on the other side of the state from my friends, so there really is no way to combine that one either. I am only inviting personal friends to the friend shower and only family to the family shower, so people do not think I am trying to get gifts out of them. Also, I read online that I am supposed to give thank you gifts. What are some cute/good ideas for gifts to give the hostesses?

I constantly see people talking about baby showers and bridal showers. In the UK we don't have these. We don't really have engagement parties, we have a hen do, and then the wedding. I'm 14. My mom is 5 months pregnant, and i was wondering if i should throw her a baby shower. People in other questions said moms only get one baby shower usually unless there is a gap. This is my moms fifth kid, and I am the oldest. My brothers are 11, 9, & my sister is soon to be 7. Would yous consider that a gap? And, do you think she should get another one?
