Related articles from Yahoo AnswersOpen Question: Why is there no category for preparedness or survivalism?
I saw a great question lastnight regarding what to do if TSHTF, and it was posted in Hunting. I noticed one of the answerers stated such a question did not belong in the Hunting forum, so I searched Yahoo! Answers this morning for questions using the terms "survivalism" and "preparedness", hoping to find a category in which such a topic was suitably classified. Yet I found questions in:
Home and Garden - Other
Hunting
Politics
Philosophy
Geology
Hunting
I worked for 5 years at Barnes and Noble, running the newsstand. In all my time there, most every magazine I came across regarding survivalism was filed under hunting. The books ranged from cooking (Apocalypse Chow) to sports under H for hunting (these would be the gun books, including priced guides which have nothing to do with Hunting, technically) to Weapons of War or sports under C for camping (also not really a camping thing, especially if one is preparedness minded for survival At Home). So... if there's not a classification for this type of topic, and it doesn't belong in Hunting, where Does it go? o.O
Since preparedness is both a lifestyle and a mindset, I am a bit lost on where to even begin to classify this according to Yahoo's provided categories. Thoughts?
Open Question: Why do we use "feminism" still?
The more time I spend on this board, the more frustrating the semantics get. It seems that most of the people here agree with eachother, it's just a war over the word "feminism". On one side, "feminists" argue that it is the proper word for the anti-sexism movement, while on the other, "anti-feminists" point out all of the hate literature that's been published under the flag of "feminism" and the sheer irony of having a gender-biased word to describe a gender-blind movement.
Personally, I'm no more fond of "feminism" being used for something that I believe in than a woman would like to be called a "congressman". In particular, I still remember being a young man in highschool being visited by a "feminist" who was little more than a hate speaker who was later thrown out of the building, and then later, when bored waiting around for my parent to pick me up in a Barnes and Noble (a bookstore), finding an entire section of "feminist" books detailing the genetic inferiority of men and how the world would be so much better off if it was just all women.
For me, the word "feminism" is tainted beyond recognition of what it may have once meant to an older generation. Still, I am at a loss for how decent people could carry such a sullied term as a symbol of their ideology. In short, my question is:
If you still use "feminism" to describe a gender-blind/neutral view, why do you do so? How can the gender-bias etymology be found favorable? How can we accept the term when it is consistently used by female supremacists to spread their messages of hate?
I'm not sure if you're being fair there, Winter. While most titles are misused now and then, even when someone asks for a feminist book on here, the one recommended by a "feminist" comes with the acknowledgement that it does bash on men. Is the man-bashing really in the minority?
Still, my larger question is why "feminists" do not reject the sexism in their own title.
Mandy M, why just assume I'm a liar? Is having a different opinion really grounds to question my honesty? If you think I'm just some sexist man out to be a bastard, I would suggest you reconsider your own views. This is a legitimate conern of mine, and I do feel that I'm entitled.
Open Question: Guy at a book store?!?
So today I had to run up to Barnes and noble for a book that I bought for my niece's 16th birthday... so I asked this guy for help. I haven't dated anyone forever I have been so busy for medical school that I just don't pay attention. Well, we got to talking about school and the football game tonight and I felt a spark. He kind of lingered around my general area for awhile and kept talking... I didn't make a move, he went to the next isle and said he needed to get back to work before his boss got on him but he would be there if I needed help... I didn't so I left. For some reason I just can't get it off my mind... what do u think I should do.
Thanks
Open Question: Authorized Seller on Barnes & Noble?
I bought a new book from an Authorized Seller on Barnes & Noble. Are the Authorized Sellers on Barnes & Noble reliable? I never bought from them before. In the past, I have bought from Half.com and Amazon marketplace. This time the cheapest copy was from an Authorized Seller on Barnes & Noble. I am nervous because Barnes & Noble does not have a feedback system like other sites and my book is like $100+.

Resolved Question: What is a better title for this piece?
And do you think it is good?
"My treat" or "The outing"
As I step into my dad’s dark green Suzuki, he tells me we’re going to Barnes and Noble on the way home. My heart starts to jump. There, I can relax over a nice cold Frappicino and read a pleasant book. My dad drinks a hot decaf coffee; hold the sugar. We slowly pull into the parking lot in front of the store and my dad tells me to be careful, the road outside is slippery. I carefully walk across the street where cars are speeding along. We enter the big glass doors and a rush of warm air greets us. Without a sound, we head over to the café section of the bookstore. We get in line to order our treats and we slowly become warmer as the icy air of outside melts off of or cheeks and coats. I measure myself against his chest, still shorter than him. He reaches over and starts to give me a hug. His warmth melts my heart and I reach into my pocket and feel around for a five dollar bill to pay with. My dad stops my hand and looks thoughtfully into my eyes.
“My treat.” he whispers as he reaches into his wallet. He lets me order my drink and I scamper off to find a book. Five or ten minutes later I grab my one book and return to find my dad buried behind a monumental stack of books. All of them about colleges. You can barely see his hairless head peeking from behind them.
“Again?” I ask. This is the third time this month that we have came here and the third time he has been researching colleges for my brother
“This is important to me.” He replies, not taking his nose out of his book. I sigh and sit down to drink and read my book. On my seat is a wrapped brownie. I laugh to myself and sit down, holding the brownie. I unwrap it and bite into it. An hour later, my dad looks over and asks me what I’m reading. I show him the cover of the book and he takes it into his hands and reads the back. He slowly gets up gives me my book back and walks away. He’s probably looking for some another college book. He comes back with the same book I was reading, the sequel and the prequel. He starts to read the prequel and hands me the sequel.
“To keep us busy all night, I’m in no hurry to go anywhere.” He remarks. He sits down on his chair and reads on. After a while, the air gets chilly and I start to shiver. Having a cold drink in my hand doesn’t help.
“Hey dad, when are we leaving? I’m getting kind of cold.” I state, shivering now. He looks at me and I can clearly see the booklover inside him. He obviously does not want to leave his sanctuary of literature only to go home and face real world problems. He would much rather stay here and read… even if he is just reading some children’s book.
“Why don’t you take my jacket.” he responds in an attempt to keep me satisfied enough so we can stay for even a few more moments.
“Fine, give me my jacket.” I pull my heavy winter coat over the table between us and drape it over myself sloppily. I take a sip of my drink but nothing comes up through my straw. I set the drink down and look over at my father hunched over his book, unaware of anything around him. He’s put on his large khaki winter jacket over one of his many tacky sweaters. His woolen socks are peering out of his old. I sigh, that’s my dad I tell myself. His bulky, literary, studious self will always be there for me. He looks up at me and our eyes meet.
“You okay now?” he asks
“Better than ever.”

Resolved Question: What's wrong with me?
I wasn't able to read the books I really wanted due to me having to study extremely hard for my last semester well actually I wasn't able to read the books I wanted since I started College in 2006. I found it very difficult to juggle required school readings along with reading just for fun so Lately i've been on sort of a book buying frenzy for some reason almost like I felt like I've missed out on so much by not reading what i wanted for the past two years that 'll just buy books just for the hell of it. I'll ask for book suggestions if I find the author's work interesting i'll order them online or i'll go to barnes and noble to purchase them. My mom got upset because she says i'm buying to many books when I can only read one at a time. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

idk... maybe i'm PMSing...
I've read twilight in 2006. Way before anyone thought of making a movie for twilight. YES i was addicted to twilight. Breaking dawn came out and i was one of those people who went to barnes and noble on midnight to get a copy. Twilight is a great book. I started telling my friends about the Twilight series BUT nobody wanted to read it since it was about vampires and thought it was creepy. NOW GUESS WHAT!!! Those friends are reading the books are like "OMY GOD! I LOVE EDWARD!!" IT makes me furious. For the people who read the books after the movie. I feel sorry for you guys 'cause now you imagin e edward as Robert and bella as kirstin.
I HATED THE MOVIE
Robert was too hairy (Hairy chest. Edward's chest was described as like marble aren't marble hard and smooth?)
Kirsten's voice was like a guy's voice...
And it makes me mad to see these Twilight MOVIE fans obsessed.
ANYONE else feel the same way?
