A griffin, a purple flower, a oil lamp and a lily. Are these symbols relevant to a specific organization, club, or public office (British, Canadian, or American)? • Open Question: When is a 10-day eBay auction better than a 7-day auction?
I have just inherited several hundred jazz, Big Band and classical LPs from the 1940s to the 1960s and am planning to auction them off on eBay and was wondering if it makes any real difference between a 7-day auction and a 10-day auction for valuable collectibles such as this. Does the extra three days usually make much difference as long as the auction ends at a good time (usually Sunday evenings, from my observation)?
  • Open Question: Help? How do I know what to price antique/vintage documents?
I'm selling five loose leaf notebooks from the early to mid 1930s. Each notebooks is from a female geography student and is categorized by country with tons of newspaper clipping covering important historical events around the world in the 1930s. Each section has a hand written description explaining the pictures in the newspaper clippings and discusses the history of that country and whatever important events were going on at that time. Each notebook is about 2" inches thick and has TONS of pics (including many historical land marks), but I don't know what to price them all at as a collection. They are in GREAT condition and the front page has the student's name, as well as a marking from the teacher complimenting the quality of the work. Does anyone know what to price vintage/antique collectibles like this at? I want to be fair to the potential buyer, but I also don't want to cheat myself.

  • Open Question: Mossberg Maverick 88 .12 ga. What can I expect?
I couldn't stand taking my Benelli o/u out in the duck blind and it didn't seem right taking Dad's 50 year-old Wingmaster either. So, I'm at Academy and see this $165 pump-action out-of-the-box Mossberg Maverick 88. It seemed like the perfect answer and after a round of skeet I am truly impressed. Now, tell me what I should expect and what can I add to make it a good substitute for my collectibles. As for add-ons I was thinking of the accu-chokes and sights. I am not at the entry level after 20 years of hunting. I just don't want to take a $1000+ shotgun or a family heirloom out to the bay blind in my boat. This just seemed to fit that bill. Thanks for your input!

  • Open Question: Can you tell me anything about this "Letter opener"?
I bought this possibly bronze item about eight years ago at a traveling antique and collectibles fair. It is about five inches long and very worn and aged looking. It says The Arms Were Granted in 1413 by King Henry V for the finding of the true Cross on one side. It very engraved and decorative and has a top that is a castle, the family crest and says COLCHESTER. It doesn't rust or turn green so I guess it is bronze because of its weight and color. Can anyone tell me how to find more info on it? I've looked on on search engines and even emailed the Colchester society in England. Thanks, Cp

I'm new to gaia, and I bought the September Monthly Collectible for fun. Anyway, it says on Gaia that MC usually comes with two items...however if you go into the previews for the past months, if you click the item, it pops up a box and you have like 5-10 other items within it. • Resolved Question: Favorite toys in cereal back in the day?
Dave B. reminded me of something. My mom bought Shredded Wheat cereal, and I remember my brothers collecting these small rubbery alien toys that came in the box, they were tan, and you put them on your spoon handle. I guess it was to make you want to eat your Shredded Wheat, but I didn't like Shredded Wheat back then. Does anyone remember those little figures I mentioned or any other collectibles from the cereals from the 1960 back? Perhaps I may be a minority, but I always did like Grape Nuts, still do. Ewell Gibbons did those commercials back in the 70s, didn't he? Or am I thinking of another cereal?

  • Resolved Question: song and lyrics mix up?
So a while ago i was looking up Brand New lyrics so i can label the songs correctly on iTunes. And when i got to "Millstone" the lyrics didn't match the lyrics being sung. And looking through all the songs by Brand New i still didn't find lyrics to match the song i'm listening to. So, i took some time and decided to write down a little bit of the lyrics and maybe someone would know what the song actually is... "She’s just seventeen, nice and pretty with a deadly disease. And the weight of the world on her prosthetic shoulder. And by the summer of ninety six her body is cracked like porcelain just like some precious moments collectible and a hospital gown and a thick round golden halo and so three cheers for my morose and grieving prowls and now lets hear it for the tears that I’ve round up. We’ve come to far to have to give it all up now. "

  • Resolved Question: Is the Traynor YGM-3 a good guitar amp?
It's from the '70s, and comes with 3 preamp tubes and 2 power amp tubes. They are vintage Phillip tubes. I play mostly rock, indie, and every once in a while some distorted stuff. Traynor amps are Canadian made, and I'm thinking due to the age, it will have a good classic tone. I think it will also be very collectible. The person is selling it for $400, but it is negotiable. They put and Eminence speaker in it, but are also giving me the standard Marsland one as well. Is this a good investment, both for the music aspect as well as resale.

  • Resolved Question: Are OLD baseball cards still worth as much and as collectible as they were 15 years ago?
I found a box of probably 600 cards from the early 50's and 60's in my grandpa's house. They all look like they have never been touched. Should I try to find out the value on my own or take them to a collector? I fear that they will try to rip me off and offer to buy the cards for far less then they are worth. • Resolved Question: why is pokemon so famous?
I agree that pokemon RPG series are good games. But there are much better games for the same systems like mega man battle network, and mega man star force, they are also in the collectible RPG genre of games but yet they are not famous in america. They probably sold 30X more copies of pokemon than those games. So I am wondering why those games which are better than pokemon are not famous, but pokemon is famous? you probably havent even played battle network if you are saying comments like that. Guess what in megaman you can use 30 battle chips per battle, thats way better than 6 pokemon

  • Resolved Question: how do you downsize your belongings?
I need some tips on downsizing the stuff in my apartment. I've already given away and gotten rid of a lot of stuff. But I'm trying to simplify even more. My main issues are that I don't like throwing away things that are still good, and I would rather get money for it than donate, but sometimes that leads to keeping things around longer. Also, I have guilt issues when I get rid of things and I fear regretting it... I try to follow the 6 month rule (if I haven't used it in 6 months it's out!) but I worry that I'm making too many exceptions. Here are some of my main hangups below. decorative - clearly, you don't NEED or USE anything decorative. So where do you draw the line at what is enough to have around the house to make it cozy and personalize, versus what can be considered clutter? computer parts - I usually keep parts when I upgrade my PC in case the current on breaks and I need a backup. Is this just a waste of space? I mean, it's not good to throw those things out (very hazardous for the environment - they leak lead and other toxins!) and it's hard to find places to recycle them anyway. So I figure I keep them around until I can donate them or until I can use them, but they do take up space... right now I have a power supply, hard drive, video card, and some RAM just sitting in a box as backup... is this a waste?? clothing - The 6 month rule works quite well here, but I'll admit there are a few items I keep either as novelty items for when I feel like dressing out of the ordinary or that I keep because it seems like a waste to give them away when I paid XX$ for them and only wore them X times. Is it time to let go? art supplies - This is a tough one. I don't do as much art work as I used to, and the media I use now is quite different. I do more photo and mixed media than before, but less painting and drawing. I have pastels, crayons and markers that I've been keeping for years and haven't used in at least 5 years. They're expensive to replace, but am I really going to replace them if I haven't had time to use them in that long? It's hard to let go when I've been keeping them that long and feels like I'm giving up on my art if I give them away :( art work - I don't know if I can let go of anything I've made. I can always sell my work, but that hasn't worked too well for me so far. In the meantime, it accumulates. Sometimes I do shows, but it's been rare in the past 6 months. I hope to get back into it. This is a conundrum for me. things that don't belong to me - I have a couple things that friends have left at my house during a party or whatnot and that I've had for some time. Is it terribly inconsiderate to give it away when they haven't claimed it in this long? What if they come searching for it one day? gifts - This is a tough one too, ridden with guilt. I have an old vase my late uncle gave me that I don't really want to keep anymore because it takes up space and clashes with my stuff... little trinkets given to me by students or old friends, some of who I'm in touch with and other whom I no longer speak to. It seems blasphemous to give away a gift... How do you handle this one? expensive items - I hate giving away expensive things. I do a lot of photo and have several cameras from when I studied photography, as well as lots of photo equipment. I doubt I'll need it again, and there's no one to give it to really or sell it to, but this stuff was so expensive that I hate getting rid of it... What to do? I can't just throw it out!!! And is it really useful to DONATE specialized equipment? It might just collect dust in a thrift shop :( collectibles (movies, books, music, photo albums) - Obviously, I don't use every movie or book or song or photo album every six months. This is one of the hardest things to downsize, especially because it's a trip down memory lane every time I go through this stuff to get rid of anything. I've managed to downsize some of my collection but it's very difficult. Advice needed! Big time! dishware and useful objects - I never know when to draw the line on this one. Sometimes these things are expensive to replace if you make a mistake by giving them away. Sometimes I get so discouraged when I try to downsize. It seems like so much effort to get rid of THINGS. Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated! (I like long answers!) 10 pts to someone who addresses each item with advice on how to get over my hangups ;)
  • Resolved Question: Would this shirt wear out over time?
I'm a huge fan of Twilight and here's a shirt I bought: http://www.hottopic.com/hottopic/store/product.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302028399&PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442183193&bmUID=1219689490686 I was wondering if it would fade over time if I wore it and washed it and stuff. Like the picture and everything. I'm thinking about getting the same shirt. One to wear and the other to keep as a collectible. If I kept one as a collectible would that one still wear out without someone wearing and washing it?
