Open Question: Upgrading Hardware w/ Vista Home Premium 64-Bit O.E.M.?
I would like to know if I would be able to upgrade my video card, while I'm using windows vista home premium 64-bit oem. I know oem does not like major hardware changes. I replace my 120g harddrive with a 500g during christmas having to reinstall vista. I had to call microsoft and reactivate my copy of windows. My current setup is as follows:
Amd 3800 x2 socket 939, asus a8n-sli premium, evga geforce 7600gt, and a-data 4gb ddr 400 pc3200 ram. I would like to upgrade my system with a nvidia gtx 260. Would they consider this a being a part of the major hardware change? I know cpu and motherboard would? Would it be as simple as just calling microsoft again? I would like to buy a new computer, but not right now. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!
Thank you for your reply. portbee z you are a prick for posting a virus, douche bag get a life. Any advice as to whether it would be a good idea, considering my system is getting out dated. Is there a chance my system could bottleneck a faster card? I don't think so, but just curious.

Open Question: HOW DO I KNOW WHAT HARDWARE FIXES I NEED TO MAKE FOR MY COMPUTER?
My computer turns on fine and everything, but once making it past the initial windows loading screen, nothing shows up. During the windows loading screen, blue stripes from top to bottom appear in long columns, and when the loading is done, nothing shows up but the blue-green colored background where the accounts should be to log in. I am currently using the Vista operating system. I've tried all the options from safe mode to the last known good configuration. When in safe mode the screen appears black, with "Safe Mode" in each corner, but nothing to click on. My father, who knows computers pretty well, says the problem could be a couple different types of hardware, from a new video card, to a new motherboard. I want to be sure before I go spending my money on the wrong thing. And if it helps, my computer was used in high temperatures, so whatever hardware gets damaged in heat may be a good lead (my fan was not working properly at the time). Can someone please help me get this problem resolved as soon as possible!
Open Question: possible hardware problem?
So i recently installed a copy of windows xp pro on my new computer that i built.. after the full install.. the first thing i noticed that my NIC card wasnt showing up in device manager.. I installed my other nic card from my other comp and it worked... for gaming i play counter strike and half life multiplayer.. when i first started playing after the new install i jumped in an HL server.. everything was running smoothly. after being in the server for about 10 minutes i start feeling these sudden jolts against my character.. like i'd be walking, or in the middle of a jump and i would kind of keep freezing for a split second.. so i figured it was a connection problem so i let it ride for bit.. but as i kept playing in the server i noticed the jolts kept getting heavier and more frequent.. i then finally unplugged my ethernet chord and waited about an hour to try it again.. i go into a server,, and my guns are shootin all fast, i mean my effin pistol was shooting out like a 9mmar..seemed as though it had gotten 5x worse.. So i created a server to see what would happen.. and i wasnt getting the jolting or anything, my character was just going about 4X the normal speed.. including walking, jumping, shooting.. etc... so i'm guessing that why i get the jolting during an internet game is because my character is moving too fast and steam is trying to slow me down... because when i create my own server.. my guns shoot really fast and i walk fast.. but no jolting.. does anyone know why this might be doing this? i talked to my one friend and he said it's probably a setting in windows xp that you have to set to a lower speed.. but i dunno, i've never had this prob until now.. and i've been playing cs/hl for 8 years now.. thanks guys
Open Question: vista blue screen error help!?
omg! for the 2nd time in 3 days a blue screen error came up.. sumthing bout that it needed 2 shutdown to prevent damage exc...
n my solutions came up with this first time..
Consider BIOS upgrade
Microsoft is unable to determine the exact cause of this error. However, this problem was most likely caused by an error in your computer’s random access memory (RAM). RAM is the main internal storage area the computer uses to run programs and store data.
During the crash analysis, we noticed the basic input/output (BIOS) system version on this computer does not match the specifications for the central processing unit (CPU), also known as a processor, that is installed on your computer. This can occur when a newer processor is installed on an older system board or older BIOS. Using a BIOS that does not support the installed processor can result in Windows system crashes. Contact your computer manufacturer or motherboard manufacturer for an updated version of BIOS for your computer's processor.
How do I find my computer manufacturer (OEM)?
You can find the name of your computer manufacturer (also known as the original equipment manufacturer or OEM) by following these steps:
Click the Start button , right-click Computer, and then click Properties. Your computer manufacturer's information is listed under OEM Info.
If you do not see your computer manufacturer information, click the Start button , type msinfo32 in the Search box, and then press ENTER. Your computer manufacturer is listed in the right pane of the System Information window.
Click to go online to see contact information for most computer manufacturers
Additional information
Note
Upgrading the BIOS version may require moderate to advanced troubleshooting skills. If you are uncomfortable with performing these steps, you might want to consider consulting with paid technical support.
If your computer contains an Intel processor, you can use special utilities to identify your specific processor. Click the following link to go online for more information:

Troubleshoot driver problems
Blue screen error caused by a device or driver
You received this message because a hardware device, its driver, or related software has caused a blue screen error. This type of error means the computer has shut down abruptly to protect itself from potential data corruption or loss. In this case, we were unable to detect the specific device or driver that caused the problem.
Troubleshooting
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following troubleshooting steps might prevent the blue screen error from recurring. Try them in the order given. If one step does not solve the problem, then move on to the next one.
Step 1: Download and install the latest updates and device drivers for your computer
Use Windows Update to check for and install updates:
Go online to Windows Update:
Windows Update
Click the Check for Updates link in the left pane, and then click View available updates.
What if I don't see any available updates?
If you see the You receive updates: Managed by your system administrator message you can try clicking the link to Check online for updates from Microsoft Update or Check online for updates from Windows Update but you might need to contact your system administrator to obtain the desired updates.
If you don't see the message above and no updates are available in Windows Update, after you click the Check for Updates link in the left pane, then the available updates have already been installed.
Select all Important and Recommended updates.
Select the Optional updates you want, and then click Install. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
If you recently added a new hardware device to your computer, go online to the manufacturer's website to see if a driver update is available.
If you recently added a new program to your computer, go online to the manufacturer's website to see if an update is available.
Step 2: Remove any new hardware or software to isolate the cause of the blue screen
If you received the blue screen error after adding a new hardware device or program, and downloading updates didn't solve the problem, try removing the device or program and restarting Windows. If removing the new device or program allows Windows to start without the error, contact the device or program's manufacturer to get product updates or t

Open Question: A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer?
On Sunday, I was on my Dell computer and nothing was loading... I was trying to get onto the Internet and it just wouldn't load. And then it decided to freeze up. So I shut the computer down by holding the button down and then restarted it. But when I restarted it a screen came up that said: Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.
And then it tells me I can start up in safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, last known good configuration, or start windows normally.
I have tried ever single one of those and each and every one of them leads to that dreaded blue screen that says: A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you’ve seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps: Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.
Technical information:
*** STOP: 0X00000024 and a bunch of other numbers and letters...
And there's no way for me to get past this screen...
So what am I supposed to do? Can my computer and all my stuff on it still be saved? I would greatly appreciate your help!

I ain't know pro, but, I have done as much research as I could, and could
not find anything on why I am constantly needing to stop a device I don't have
after every time I restart my computer. The only troubleshooting step I've taken is
unplugging the device, which still, I have know clue what it is, so I unplugged all
USB connections, plugged them back in, restart computer, rinse and repeat. All my drivers, and software are up to date. So my question is,
how can I stop the device, and not have it come back to haunt me?
The USB's Im currently using are
Logitech Microphone AK5370
Logitech Cordless Desktop® MX™ 3200 Laser
Other than that, everything is working well.

Open Question: Windows XP Computer Mouse Problems.. I need serious help!!!!?
Hi, i have 2 computers in my house, one is quite fast and is much newer, the other is older and slower but is still useful. My good computer is running well and the mouse works. However, the other computer's mouse suddenly ceased to work. So i thought, maybe it just has hardware failure, so i plugged in a second mouse but it still doesn't work either. I got into control panel using the keyboard and clicked system and got to device manager, but the mice and other pointers category is missing, neither mouse ie being recognized.
Also, when i brought the mouse from my good computer and plugged it into the computer with the problems, the mouse worked, So what do i do! how can i get the other mouses to work!
Open Question: Which Linux distro will most quickly get me building it from source.?
I'm an experienced old hack in computers, totally comfortable in assembler and C, though I haven't done any serious programming in 15 years (then it was Unix-based compiler/assemblers to naked binary firmware objects). I don't really know Unix/Linux much beyond cc, grep and the like and modifying a low level few device drivers. Package and installation management and so on are all foreign to me; so I need something that teaches that or makes it easy to learn.
I want to build, install, run and customize Xen from source.
To do that Xen needs a GRUB-loaded Linux system that I can readily rebuild and modify versions from source. I'm willing to get new hardware and software to do this. So which Linux distro can I install on new hardware (it will have to have CPU support for Vanderpool to run latest Xens) so I will be up and successfully running "makes" to rebuild 100% Linux and then Xen from source will least pain to get from here to there. I'm OK with running two systems (a build and a target) if that is needed.
thanks,
Open Question: Computer not turning on.?
I was running the computer at normal rates... no extra stress or overclocking. The power strip I was using suddenly sparked and the CPU turned off.
NOTE: No other appliances (monitor, TV, PS2) connected to the power strip had any problems. They did not shut off nor did they even blank out for a sec.
I believe it's the power supply at fault. It smells burnt now.
All I'm wondering is, Should I look to diagnose other hardware for problems (HDD, Motherboard) or should I just go and get the power supply replaced? I'm afraid I might have lost the data on my HDD.
Also, what could have caused this shutdown and damage? I looked into power surges (voltage spikes), but they seem to focus around what happens in a thunderstorm. It was a right ad sunny day (until this happened). Also, if it was a power surge through the internet line, why didn't it affect my dad's computer, as mine is connected to the internet through his.
Lastly...what can I do to prevent this happening agaion?

Open Question: Need Help Retrieving Data.?
I have a HP Pavilion 6535, 8.4 GB Ultra DMA hard drive. Whenever I turn the computer on it takes 30-40 seconds to reach the Windows screen. On windows everything works for 2-3 minutes until the computer shuts down, no warning screen or anything basically no power. If I can turn on my computer there is a hundred percent chance that it will crash and I do not have enough time too look through or scan files or hardware for defects. Also I have to unplug the power source, even unscrew it from the compartment sometimes to get the computer to turn back on. I have been having this problem with this pc for about 4 months. Also after waiting 3 months leaving the computer in the closet, I turned it on no problem but of course after a few minutes it crashed. Now it won't turn on again, probably unless I do the power source trick which I hate taking the time to try, so I might have to wait a while before another attempt.
One hardware thought is whenever the fan turns on I have a feeling that this is when the computer turn off. Also I have not ruled out a software problem because there might be a program loaded during the start-up that when my computer turns on, shuts the computer off.
What I am trying to do is find the best way to retrieve data from the hard drive. What I know is that there has to be power going to the drive so that it can be read basically like any external hard drive. I was wondering what the best way is in retrieving data from a hard drive with or without a power source?
Is there any other options to reading and saving some of the old hard drive files other than placing it into another computer? I hate doing any internal work to a new PC because you spend so much money on it and now you have to open it up and transplant something which I will only want a few GB of file memory in retrieving. Is it possible to make the internal hard drive, external for a short amount of time enough time to transfer data from it to another storage device?
Open Question: LaCie Quadra Hard Drive?
I've been uploading various large files to a Lacie Quadra 1 TB removable drive. In an attempt to fix a small error we were having previously, my boss used disk clean up, as windows recommended. As a result all the data was lost, but more importantly, the device is no longer recognized by any computer. He asked me to reformat it, and I have the appropriate software off the internet, but add hardware, and the program I downloaded, still wont see it. I need some help.

Resolved Question: Building a computer with a Dell Dimension 2400 Case?
Im building a Gaming Computer and I was wondering If I oculd use my old Dimension 2400 Case. Here is what I would put in it.
--Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 Wolfdale 2.53GHz 3MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor
--ASUS P5K LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard
--PNY VCG88512GXEB-FLB GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card
--Kingston 2GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Desktop Memory
--EVERCOOL SFF-8SFF-8 80mm Case Fan and EVERCOOL SFF-12 120mm Case Fan
I think it already has a 250W Power Supply. WOuld all this stuff fit in that small little case? Also I am goin to use a PCI Express 2.0 Video Card so is that Case to old for that. I have another Case in mind if that one won't fit everything.

Let me know which one to use. I would like to save the $40 dollars with using the Dell Dimension 2400 Case but if its power supply wont support the hardware then I will go with the new one. What should I go with?
Plus im going to use an Aftermarket Heatsink for my Core 2 Duo Processor,

Also I found all of my hardware on Newegg.com
Alright so you recommend going with the new 500W case on Newegg.com?

Computer brings up a blue screen that says...

Driver has overrun a stock-based buffer. This overrun could potentially alter to gain control of your computer.
Check to make sure hardware or software us properly installed if this is a new instillation.
And then it gives some tech Info
