Open Question: Why do people blame Reagan for the debts run up during the 80s, when it was Congress's doing? ?
The President of the United States cannot spend a dime of the government's money.
The President of the United States does not control the government's money.
CONGRESS does!
And during Reagan's two terms in office, Congress was controlled by ... Democrats!
Reagan could not have run up those debts even if he wanted to!
Only CONGRESS controls that stuff!
So, why do so many people still blame Reagan for this, when it was clearly the doing of Congress?

Open Question: A debt collection agency mistakenly placed a legal judgment on my credit report - help!?
A debt collection agency mistakenly placed a legal judgment on my credit report. I have a son with the same name that used to live at the same address and the judgment properly belongs on his credit, not mine. What can I do to fix this?
What law(s) have they broken?
What is my best recourse or course of action at this point? Please do not tell me to contact an attorney, because I intend to, but right now I am just trying to educate myself on the matter.
Thanks!

Open Question: Who do I consult about my inheritance?
My grandfather recently passed away and I inherited a little of $700,000. I have no idea what to do with it or who to go for financial help. I am 24, single, have no kids, and I have a BBA degree. I also have no debt or student loans. I am in the U.S. Air Force and I am based in Texas, which happens to be my home state. I really have no idea what to do or who to talk to. Will someone with financial experience please tell me who to talk to? I tried to call Dave Ramsey but I couldn't talk to him. Thanks.
Should I consult the JAG office (lawyer's office) on my base?
I meant I inherited a little over $700,000.
I am not the type who buys expensive things. I would rather let it grow and keep it for retirement.
Open Question: Had wages garnished and got it overturned by judge. Now its showing disposable judment. What does that mean?
Ok. about two years ago this creditor sued me and started to garnish my wages. I went back to court and asked for exemption. The judge awarded the exemption and release of all the wages that were garnished back to me. Now the same creditor started to garnish my wages this month. What do I do? Can I do anything? I am a single mother of 5, I want this off my back. Oh and also before I knew about credit rights and all I didnt fight for statute of limitations on this orginally. My last payment to them was in 2001. Is it too late to do anything about that?
Before I get anyone judge me and say pay your debt you debtor, I have a son on life support and this is the year he was born. Since then my financial life has been a roller coaster ride.
By the way i live in California. The statute of limitations on this is 4years.
Open Question: What can I do about joint credit accounts from before divorce?
I'm willing to deal with my half of accounts - some of which I wasn't even aware of, but are fairly small balances - but the only way it's going to help my credit report is if he does the same. I'm trying to straighten things out for *my* life, and the irony is that it would affect *his* credit life for the better if he would cooperate on this. But he takes any questions as attacks and has made the statement "You do not have my permission to speak to creditors on my behalf". Well, uh, when the account is also under MY name, I have just as much right to speak to the creditor and try and work out a payment plan as he does, right? These are mainly accounts that are several years old and in the hands of creditors. There is also at least one large debt which our divorce settlement states HE is responsible for, not me. I understand that the creditor doesn't recognize the divorce decree. But what can I do about it? I'm now a single mom, with a pretty low income. There's no way I can shoulder all these debts on my own.

Open Question: How Can I Improve Already Good Credit?
I have a decent credit score, currently 726 at TransUnion.
I have zero debt.
No credit card balances, no car loan, no mortgage.
I do have a paid off car loan.
I do have 3 credit cards but i only use one, American Express Blue, and I pay it off every month.
I have never had a mortgage.
My question is how do i now make my score better?
It has been suggested to me to take out small loans and repay them in full immediately. For example I want and legitimately need a new washer and dryer, and would love to splurge on a new pair. Should i take out a loan that i don't really need to buy them, and pay the loan off immediately?
Is there any other suggestion to improve that score besides the obvious pay your bills on time etc....?
Thank you in advance for any expert advice.
Open Question: Why can't I get approved for a line of credit anywhere?
Hello, me and my partner combine make about 260k a year, 75k me, he makes about 80k and about 105k from rental properties we have together. But after taxes, health insurance and max out our retirement accounts we have about 10.5k a month. Which isnt as great when u have about 975k (rental properties & home & cars) in debt hanging over your head, but we are young so I try not to concearn my self to much about it. My credit score is in the 810's and his is in 760's (changes +1 or -1 on occasion). We pay all of our bills on time and have no credit card debt. We are looking to get a line of credit in the event anything ever happens and we need the back up. we have about 95k in total savings. We go to the bank, they pull our credit and say yall have excellent credit and you should have no problem getting approved. But then they deny us and tell us we will recieve notification in the mail why we are denied. And when we get the letter it says we have been denied due to an insufficent credit score. Has it gotten so bad now that those with high income and excellent credit cant get lines of credit? Someone help me, we just need this as a back up just in case, not to use actively.
Open Question: Need help trying to understand this situation?
I have been dating a guy for over a month and he just recently broke up with me. It turns out that he has to much debt and that is why he called it quits. I have a hard time trying to understand why he broke up with me over that. I'm not interested in his money nor do I care about it! I was happy with just him and not all his fancy stuff. For me money is not important, just as long as I have enough to pay my bills and not starve, I'm happy. My question is: What would be the reason that he broke up with me? Yeah I know because of debt, but what does that have to do with us being in a relationship? Thanks :)

Open Question: Can one collection agency buy all your debts and then consolidate them to come after you for the total?
I know an individual can call a finance company to consolidate their debt from various sources (credit cards, medical, etc) but can one collection agency buy all your delinquent debts (unsolicited by you the individual) and try and collect the total (the sum of all the individual debts massed together) from you? I have a friend in need of such info. Thanks.
Open Question: How do I resolve 4 year old debt?
I have outstanding credit card bills that were charged up between 4-5 years ago they are now in the hands of third party debt collection agencies. If I do make payments or pay them off right then and there, how will that show up on my credit report?

Open Question: What's a good way to enter into the fields of writing and journalism?
I'm currently an out of work paralegal (been temping actually for several years in the legal arena) and I think I have a knack for writing; I have received compliments from friends and colleagues. The other day, I attended a job search forum and prior to the start of the event, I spoke with one guy who suggested I apply for work as an entry-level copywriter. That was a good idea, I thought. I have checked on-line for such positions, but most require years of experience, which I lack.
I really would like to get my writing chops wet and venture forth. What do you suggest? I have contemplated going for a Masters in Journalism before but hesitated in applying after realizing there are now not that many full-time staff positions in publications out there; most are freelancers. I'm, at this stage of my life and with looming debt weighing me down daily, not that keen on hourly work or getting paid by the submitted article. I appreciate your feedback.

Open Question: Is it better to go through a credit repair service or pay the collection agency directly?
Okay, my credit is really not all that bad and I have paid off cards within the last few months. Yes I did cut them up, pay them off and closed the accounts. There are still four cards that have unpaid balances that total about $1200 and less on each. Unfortunately the accounts were opened junior year of high school and Im a sophmore in college. With that being said they are still outstanding debts and I would like to pay them off to repair my credit. Is it best to pay the third party collection agencies or go directly to a credit repair business that charges per account to clean up my credit? Is it worth it to pay them off or should I let them charge off?

Open Question: Credit card APR question? ?
I don't really know how to calculate APR but I usually just calculate in this way --> multiply balance by your APR then divide by 12 months = monthly finance charge (interest)
Not sure if this is right and I understand that they are variable...
Anyways if I do calculate in this way my APR was around 28% for the previous months (used to be much low but they jumped to 28% after paying late a couple times...which happened a while ago, not recently) and for my most recent billing cycle it jumped to over 40%!! even after reducing my debt by $3000!! I actually did a balance transfer to another card (couldn't transfer the entire balance though...new card didn't have enough credit line). I compared previous statement to my current statement and about the same finance charge was added even though I greatly reduced that particular card's balance. (How can a $3000 less balance have the same amount of finance charge? the interest rate went up like crazy when they saw I was trying to bring the balance down?)
So I started wondering oh it might be true that the credit card companies won't let you get out of debt so I contacted their customer service rep. but they weren't clearly answering my questions and none of them made sense. Does anyone know how this happened??
Open Question: what is the best place to get student loans for a first year graduate student with bad credit?
Here's the deal, I have already $30,000 of undergraduate school debt, and I want to get into more because I just got accepted into my dream school. After what the FAFSA gave me, I still need about another $10,000. I have already been rejected by some household student names such as Sallie Mae. do I have any other options?
Open Question: Why so harsh when you don't know all the details? Answers to Stimulus check!?
First of all let me clear up one thing, the student loan was from many years ago when I was trying to get myself out of a very dangerous abusive relationship when I was with my first husband.Yes it was hanging over me for a long time but I can be Greatful and happy to say I did get my student loan paid off this year.! I never denied that I didn't owe it ,I never had the education to get a decent paying job plus taking care of 4 children by myself. But thats ok you have the right to say what you want and so do I ! Thats the beauty of free speech! And just for your info I have a great job that I love now and I did'nt need to go for any training.!! So yes I have the nerve to say what I want just as you do! But people who like to make quick assumptions and judge a person before they know more to a story are unhappy people. Next time try not to judge a book by it's cover. One more thing I make roughly $20,000 a year as a short order cook working graveyard shift.
So I do know how to work and pay my debts.

Open Question: Step mom is splitting up with my dad, please help me?
It's about money...the number one reason why couples split up. She has been paying for all of the bills, all payments, the down payment for the house, groceries, absolutely everything. My dad has been in debt since his last marriage, which was 10 years ago and he doesn't make enough money to make the payments. My step mom got money from her recent divorce and that money has all ran out so she's now in debt from him. I don't know what to do and I just moved here from across the country, I've been here for 5 days and now this is happening. She can't divorce or leave because her name is on my dad's credit cards since he has bad credit, so he can get a lower interest rate, and since she paid for the down payment on the house, 80,000 dollars, she can't just leave. She'd lose all that money and have nothing to her name. This is so awful and my dad is being very selfish. I don't know what to do. I was thinking of buying a plane ticket to back where I was living before since I have friends out there, a school I can go back to, and I can stay with my grandmother again. I just want to know what you think. Thanks in advance.

Open Question: I need help! =[ I'm in debt?
So recently(about 3 months ago) I graduated and received about $1500.00 in graduation money which I put into my bank account. I also got a credit card to establish some sort of credit with. Well, needless to say, knowing that I had that money, I went out and blew ALL of it on stupid things I didn't need. Now I am in debt by almost $400.00. I am too scared to ask my mom for money and tell her what happened. I want to get a job, but I am moving away and going to school full time, and I don't want work to add onto my schooling. How can I obtain money to pay this off, without possibly getting a job for now. If it comes down to it, I definitely will, trust me! So what should I do? =/

Open Question: Should I send a letter of debt validation?
I got a call today from Creditors Interchange saying that I needed to call them over a claim of writing a bad check. In reality this is about a stop payment that I put on a check that at first I had agreed to let them process, but when I found out that the funds would not be there I called them back to stop the check but they said there was nothing I could do about it now, so I put a stop payment on the check. What should I do now? I have offered to make payments but of course they will not accept payments they want the full amount, which I can not pay, I am in between jobs right now!

Open Question: I need someone other than a co-signer for an apt.?
my friend & i have been trying to rent a place for a few months now but have failed because our monthly income isn't enough. in marin county we have to make tripe the amount of rent a month to get a place. so at the moment were looking at 2 br's for around $1550..do the math..that's A LOT for two 20 yr olds. so i've tried asking my sister to co-sign but of course, she is worried that her credit could get ruined. my friend told me something about a co-signer that doesn't have to ofiacially be a co-signer. what im saying is that i can get my sister to sign the contract with me, but not have her credit affected at all. i have no idea what this is called. she can say shes giving me enough money to make our income enough a month but if we were late or got into debt, they wouldnt bother her at all. is there any other way to get an apt without a co-signer?

Open Question: How do I file Bk myself in Fresno, CA? I found "forms" on internet, but i have no idea what to do next...?
I am trying to find a step by step how to guide. A lot of our original creditors have sold or transferred the debt to collection agencies so gathering information is difficult. I pulled our credit and I can find amounts but am I supposed to use original creditors or am I supposed to use whoever holds the debt currently? We can't afford to hire a bk attorney, and I promise I'm not completely incompetent. Just a little confused as I've never done this before. My husband and i would be filing together and we have about 65,000 in debt total. Also if anyone could recommend a "counseling service" I'd appreciate it. Do I go down to a superior court office? Thank you
Open Question: I need a credit card, but everyone turns me down?
I have probably applied for about 10 credit cards in the last six months. All of my applications were denied because I have "no revolving accounts". That means I am not in debt, right?
I had a personal loan for my car, but it's paid off now. I have a student loan for college, but it's only about $2,000. I work 35 hours a week (while I go to college), so I'm making decent money and it's not like I wouldn't be able to make my payments. . .
Help! Where do I go/What do I do to get a freakin credit card?
Open Question: what should I do? my husband is reallly letting me down?
my husband is sending porno on his work computer to friends. He has also secretly gambled online in the past. He took on a second job and paid off all the gambling debt himself.
However, I am worried that I am married to an irresponsible boy, instead of a grown man.
We have been married for 14 years and have a twelve year old son. I don't want to end up realizing I wasted my life in five years again or so if something else about him surfaces. However, I have always prided myself on my successful family.
I am reallly upset. We have already been to counseling at our church.

Open Question: Ideas for homemade inexpensive Christmas gifts?
My husband and I are tired of going broke every year trying to buy gifts for everyone. He has five brothers and sisters and 4 nieces and nephews. It gets very expensive! I've asked for the last 3 years if all of us adults could just pick one name and do a gift exchange. Everyone refuses, even though they are all in debt as well. My husband and I are trying to get out of debt and save for a house, so we're not willing to spend much this year. I was trying to think of something that I could make for everyone that would be useful and nice and cost effective. Any ideas?

I work about 20 hours a week and go to school. I have a huge outstanding credit card debt because I couldn't pay for a couple months and then the fees got so big I couldn't pay it at all! I don't make much money and my credit score is now in the 300s! How can I fix my credit?
Resolved Question: Would you support a balanced budget?
Would you support a bill that required a balanced budget without increasing the national debt and required the national debt to be paid off within 50 years at the rate of 2% of the highest point per year?
Why or why not?
Open Question: HSBC Auto loan in charge off?
I have a account in charge off status with HSBC auto finance. I payed this loan for two years before filling chapter 13 bankruptcy. I made payments into the chapter 13 trustee for 3 years before falling ill, loosing my job, and becoming unable to make the payments. Since then I have tried to make good on my debts and pay some of the creditors. The one that I am having problems with is HSBC! I have called and offered to pay a portion of the debt in return for them to leave me alone and stop with the harassing phone calls. The phone numbers they are calling aren't even mine but worse the people I listed as references 6 years ago. The first offer I made was denied and after pulling together my resources I was able to offer more money. The offer now sits at 50% of the balance. They still will not settle and the vehicle blue books for less than what I am offering, and still all I hear from them is the word RE-PO. I don't want to have to file bankruptcy again and have had no problem with other creditors, but I have to do something ASAP before these people drive me crazy. Oh and I ran my credit report and it shows the account has been charged. Also the vehicle they want so bad has no value since it needs a transmission and has not run in almost 3 years. Any insight or advise is greatly appreciated.
Open Question: LVNV Funding hired the law firm of Eric Berman to collect an old debt from me?
They served me papers on Monday. I contacted the law firm. Told me that it was a GE account. It may be an old account of mine, but upon searching the internet for this LVNV Funding, there's fraud written all over the place. People that pay off the amounts are contacted years later by the same company to pay more money on a past debt, etc. How do I answer this summons requesting validation of this debt? If they take me to court and by some strange chance, do have proof of this debt, what will happen then? They say I owe around 2,000, but if I don't pay it by tomorrow, they will tack on the extra 800 in lawyers fees, etc.
I did contact the law firm and they told me that I have to hire a lawyer and answer the summons. That's all they would say, then they cut me off. Refused to speak to me anymore. The guy that I am dealing with is a Debt Collector with the firm, not an attorney.
