  • Open Question: I know you can never be 'too' old 4 school....but ...am I??
Ok so this will now be my 5th year that I’ve been out of school, and I’m starting to wonder am I getting to old to go back. What I “envisioned” myself doing was, starting @ a comm. college, transferring 2 a 4 year 2 graduate, and finishing off at medical school for a career in psychiatry. This is what SHOULDVE happened. Now, I’m 22 going on 23, not in school, and working like crazy. I just feel like I’m too old because all of my friends did the whole “college straight out of high school thing” and ALL of them graduated this year while I have yet to even begin. Needless to say, that’s a little discouraging. I mean think about this w/me, if I start school again I’ll be 23, so, 23 plus the 4yrs it will take to finish, that’s 27, THEN the 4 yrs in med school, that’s 31, IN ADDITION TO the yr or so it will take to do my residency THAT 33!! I will be all the ripe old age of 33 when my actual career even begins. Where do I fit marriage, what about children? It’s all so confusing. NOT to mention the fact that EVERY time I try to start school again something comes up, this time it was a problem w/ the financial aid. Its almost like I’m not meant to do this. Also where am I going to fit in all the summer volunteer work im going to need for my med school application to look even half way Decent….I'm freaking out and the more time I spend freaking out, the less time Im in school…..any ideas?
  • Open Question: Parents want to put home in my name to avoid it getting taken away when in nursing home but we don't want to?
My parents are near retirement and want to transfer their house to my name so that if they go to nursing home later on, the house won't get taken away. I personally have issue with that and think they should sell the house to pay for nursing home and also, I don't want the house in my name because it will then be listed as an asset in my name. Which means when my children go to college, they probably won't get financial aid or anything because they'll see the house and say "asset...just sell it to pay for college"! So I feel like it just isn't worth it. Anyone else face this issue? How did you handle it? My parents were very offended when I said I didn't want their house in my name.
  • Open Question: College loans and my career choice?
I'm 24 years old and looking forward to attending a technical institute for graphics design. The cost will be about 22k - 25k, and the course is only 1.5 years long. I've heard a lot about loans, good and bad. I'm trying to research everything and get as many answers as I can. These are questions that I've had on my mind: 1) I've heard loans can gain huge amounts of interest, turning a simple 25k loan for school into an expense almost impossible to pay off! How do I prevent getting into a situation like this? 2) I make a little bit over $8 an hour at my current job, full time. My monthly expenses usually use up almost my entire paycheck! When I go to school I will have to quit my job, move to a new apartment and area, and get a night shift someplace else which might be only part time. How will I survive AND pay off my loans? 3) I won't be getting any support from my parents. The next school year starts close to when I turn 25. My parents have their own business, but are barely getting by, because they don't make a lot of money. How much financial aid do you think I could qualify for? 4) With my career choice, how easy and quickly can I pay off my loans? Any advice is greatly appreciated!!

  • Open Question: why did my federal perkins loan decreased?
basically my cost of attendance is 21,000 and efc is 4000. the fed perkins was 1000 now it went down to 500. Now, I called financial aid but i'm still skeptical; they said that my outside scholarships affected it. I thought scholarships do NOT affect fin. aid if the total amount rewarded falls within the cost of attendance. Or tell me, do they affect the aid if it falls OVER the [cost of attendance - efc] or just [cost of attendance] itself?? Thanks! srry, let me make it clearer. that IS the school's cost of a., not my personal one.
  • Open Question: Does the college application process discourage anybody else?
For instance, the financial aid process. I'm getting screwed over with money due to insufficient information given to me by the college and a low level of response by the lenders to my inquiries. It's starting to really piss me off. The entire process is so overwhelming, especially when I have a father who believes I should be able to do this all on my own without any prior experience, and a mother who can't stop blaming my father for all the terrible things that happen to either her or me. So, how does anyone else feel about this subject?

So does this mean that I am still on probation and will not receive financial aid? I checked my status online and it doesn't say I'm on probation anymore.

  • Open Question: How am i going to be able to pay for college?
This is probably the most general question i can ask, but im looking to go into medicine. This being said i would love to come out of my first 4 years of school debt free as med school will put me heavy into debt most likely. Im planning on majoring in biochemistry or possibly biology as some schools do not have biochemistry as a major. Ok so heres my problem. A lot of schools i am looking at are right around 50,000 a year. There's no way i can afford that. I also dont have the chance for financial aid, as my dad makes 90,000 a year, but isn't going to cover barely any of my schooling, especially not what the state (based on financial aid stuff) says he can cover. I am retaking my ACT this fall, the first time i took it i got a 29 composite, probably not my best. I am taking college part time this year, its my senior year in high school, and by the end of the year i should have around 30 credits built up. My high school GPA is a 3.85. I feel that im there academic wise, but i know that a school isn't going to hand me 50 grand because i got a good score on my ACT...is there any path i can take to help me through this mess, or am i going to be stuck going to a state school and sacrifice a good private education in order to be able to cover the costs of schooling? Right now the best place i think i could go would be Carleton College in Northfield, MN (im from MN so ya) Thats like 45,000 a year tho...so right now my 1 and 2 options are the University of Minnesota and Lipscomb University down in Nashville, TN (possibly Vanderbilt for med school if i go there?)

  • Open Question: Financial Aid for Early Childhood?
I was working at a daycare until recently. I decided to switch from a secondary ed. major to early childhood. While at the daycare, someone came from a state program offering financial aid to anyone wishing to further their education. I jumped at the opportunity to receive more info, but so far haven't heard anything. This is supposedly separate from the FAFSA and other state aid. It's a program for early childhood majors in Illinois. Does anyone know a website or anything?

My Lil Brother is planning on applying to NMU(Northern Michigan University) He is hoping to go for a Bachelor of Fine arts in Digital Cinema with dreams of 1 day becoming a Movie Producer/director and Screenwriter. His parents won't pay for his tuition and he doesn't qualify for a lot of Financial aid, so I am gonna pay for him to go to College. I have checked out there website and i got lost, we can't figure out what Classes he will have to take Aside from AD 121,221,321,421 and 458. A Few Side-notes He is Home-schooled- so talking to a Counselor is out, and when i called the school i got just as lost as with there website. He knows there are other Film specific schools in the area, but He wants to go the NMU because of its Hockey Program and because most of his friends are going there. He has the grades to get in and high enough scores on the SAT and ACT. So if anyone could give me any info on which classes he will have to take it would be greatly appreciated. Also is a BFA going to help him get a Movie studio related job in the future or should we try and find a different Major for him. Thanks in advance
  • Resolved Question: Are there any colleges near Corona, California?
Alright, so I am thinking about moving in with my Mom to cut down my college expenses. I am starting my second year of college... and yes I did college right after High School. I am trying to do college on my own, and let's face it... it's not cheap! I get financial aid, but not enough. I am looking for a college near Corona so that I could live with my Mom, but still be close enough to go to class. I am attending the University of Central Florida now and want to go to UCLA for Grad School. (Hopefully by then I can afford a little more and can take out loans.) Anyway, I'll be done with my Associates at the end of this semester, so Community College is a no go. I've been trying to look it up, but I am not familiar with the area. I am visiting my Mom for Christmas, and can check out campuses then. I'm looking to move come August '09. I'd be in my 3rd year, but almost done with school. Baylee, I appreciate the answer... but I know all about loans and FAFSA. I just needed to know about a college in California.

Hi, I need a really quick response. I was awarded financial aid and they have been credited to my term bill account. But they are asking for a monthly expenditure form. What if I do not submit ? will they take away the money they have awarded and credited me ? Help ! !
  • Open Question: Student loans for people with poor credit?
I have two years left of school and am in need of a loan for the next couple semesters. I filled out my fafsa but because my parents make too much money, but that financial aid doesn't cover half my tuition let alone give me any money for other debts. I want a student loan that can be deferred for at least 6 months after graduation. Unfortunately, I have bad credit, and while my parents' income is too high for me to get a sufficient amount of financial aid, they are late on bills and therefore are unable to cosign. I'm not worried about the interest rate as long as the loan is deferred and legit. I'd like to get one for around $5,000. Everyone keeps recommending fafsa to me, but I have already filled it out and received as much from fafsa as I will get.
  • Open Question: Are there any loans he could get to help him pay his way through schooling in Canada?...READ BELOW***?
My boyfriend really wanted to go to college or university in Ottawa and was looking at Algonquin. However, we have looked at loans and it seems helpless as he is from the UK. Neither of us, or our parents, have the money to pay our full tuition therefore, we would need a loan to help pay our way through a post secondary education. Seeing as I am a Canadian Citizen it makes it easier on my part to apply for that type of financial aid through OSAP. We looked at international loans but they said they would need a Canadian co- signer, which would mean he would have to depend on my mother whom cannot make that sacrifice because of personal issues. We were looking at scholarships but even at that it would only help pay a small amount and we have no idea where we would possibly go to manage the rest. We have both asked around quite a bit and I thought seeing as you work for a post secondary school especially the one that he would like to go to that you may know of some things that may help us. Therefore, my question is: Are there any loans he could get to help him pay his way through schooling in Canada? Or any other source that may be of assistance? Anything would help. Thanks for your time.
  • Open Question: What student loans don't require credit or a co-signer?
I lost my financial aid and I need a loan for school this semester. What are some options for a student loan? I am a single mother and a second year student. Please help!
  • Open Question: How do I use my financial aid?
