  • Open Question: Another Money Market Question?
Sorry if I'm driving everybody crazy! OK, I asked in my last post if MM funds were FDIC insured and I received mostly positive answers. In the meantime, I went online to the Fidelity investment site and I quote from two sources there: "An investment in a money market fund is not insured or guaranteed by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation or any other government agency." Then, another place I read: "Fidelity Investments....have determined that all of Fidelity's retail and institutional money market funds will participate in the U.S. Treasury Department Temporary Guarantee Program for Money Market Funds......The coverage would apply ONLY (my emphasis) to investments held in participating money market funds as of the close of business on September 19, 2008." So does that mean that the funds transferred by my husband from his Fidelity 401-K into a Fidelity money market fund yesterday are not insured under this U.S. Treasury program??? Therefore, this money is not really safe? I tried contacting Fidelity by phone, but I got so tired of listening to the music and the voice telling me how sorry they were to keep me waiting...I hung up.
  • Open Question: Have you ever been given the bait and switch by LasikMD in Canada?
I have been to LasikMD. Their advertised price is $490 an eye for standard lasik. On their website, they list major components of the costs as surgeon time, after care, and equipment costs. I was given a quote for $1090 an eye for standard lasik on my -5.5 precription. I asked why the difference. Was their more time with the physician I asked? No. Was a different or more expensive machine used? No. Was the aftercare different? No. Was insurance on the procedure included? No. Were there guarantees? No. Then why the difference in price? No answer. That was their price. It was my decision to have the surgery. Isn't this type of pricing illegal. Mustn't an additional service be provided for a price increase. Can anyone tell me to whom I can complain about this predatory style of pricing? Footprintz. Thanks for the response but isn't what's illegal is charging me a different price because of my prescription. With lenses there is a reason, more material, harder to construct, more time to grind but you can make no such claim for different patients of standard lasik, regardless of precription. So do you see it as a problem from that perspective.

  • Open Question: Downpayment for braces?
So after going through the initial consultation, xrays, molds etc I was given the bill of $5,225 for Damon Braces & was quoted the time of 18-24 months. Thankfully I do not have to have any extractions which is why I chose to go with this ortho(among other reasons, he's absolutely awesome) because I have hemophelia and without health insurance at the moment there is no way I could afford even the pre-medication before tooth removal. Problem? I'm only 19 and have no credit. The downpayment is 40% down which is about $2200. I cannot get a credit card, loan or anything without a cosigner...and I dont have one of those.lol Now Im sure I can save this up but I would LOVE to start treatment before the holidays...anyone have ANY ideas or suggestions? The only payment options my ortho offers is: A-40% no interest payments monthly which for me is 2200 down & 213.00 per month B-Capitol One Health Credit. Basically a credit card that can only be used for dental purposes...& I was denied for that for having no credit =(

  • Open Question: Quotes for repairing a car?
A van driver crashed into my car when it was parked outside my house and drove off. A neighbour witnessed it and reported it to the local garda. I have a quote from the main dealer for the damage, the garda has told me to get another one and that it is too dear for the damage. I don't think it is, i have already paid 75 euro for the quote, (which would be refunded on repair). How many quotes do I need to make to the individual who crashed into my car? Also, can i insist it is repaired by a garage of my choosing and am I entitled for him to pay for the use of a car if he decides to not go through his insurance.? At this stage i presume the garda knows him as its none of his business what my quote is and he hasn't even asked for the drivers name of the van or his insurance details or the fact that he left the scene of the accident. The van is one of a fleet owned by a business man and driven by a foreign driver. It is this man I am dealing with.

  • Resolved Question: Losses due to landlords neglect inform me of foundation problems?
I am renting a house in Illinois and suffered a great loss because the perimeter of the house is not sealed. Originally the concrete was pitched toward the house, the gutters were filled from the bottom to the top with dirt. My husband and I informed the landord of the problems and what repairs needed to be done and even gave her a very reasonalbe quote to do the work since we have a GC license. She stated that she wanted to look around for a better price and get back to us, because she had gotten a quote 3 years ago for a lesser amount. Well we called her at least 2-3x a week because she didn't get back with us and she responded with the same answer. We decided to just clean the gutters ourselves, there was so much dirt packed in the downspout till we had to through them out and by new ones. On Aug. 3, 2008 we got a storm and the rain came in around the entire perimeter of the house, there was minor sewer back up which we were able to control with a sump pump that we purchased from home depot. We called her for over 4 hours before we heard back from her. We ended up with 6-8 inches of water in the basement and everything was lost. The water came into the house through broken seals of the house in the basement and from a crack in the bathroom wall behind the sink. She came about 5 days later with a permit from the village for us to do the work. We later found out that a third of the water comes in from the roof. I runs down the the middle of the walls and comes out in the basement. She is aware of this and has done nothing yet. She had agreed to pay for our losses but has since changed her mind. What can I do to hold her accountable for my losses? I do have renters insurance and they told me that she is responsible for the losses and to go after her, but I don't know how.

  • Resolved Question: Someone Just Said... Read Description for the rest.?
"I am voting for Obama now and he has only given me hope" .... this was a question concerning would you vote for Obama if he gave you a bunch of free health insurance car, etc etc etc.... In my last question I stated that people are dumb, panicky dangerous animals... a Men in Black quote that for some reason stuck with me all these years.... must be 8 or 9 by now.... anyway, this is what I'm talking about... I have no decision on who I am voting for yet, Obama's hope is one reason I don't want to vote for him... he inspires this hope that has a very strong possibility of falling flat on its face and leaving us with absolutely nothing. Anyone agree that these people need to be a little bit more educated to vote? Shouldn't we require a test upon registration? Thank you for your answers. Undecided, is not uninformed. Searcher, I am simply trying to figure out what I can do to decide, that is my issue, they need to convince me, whoever convinces will get the vote. That is the idea anyway. I am currently favoring McCain because he has good ideas with no ending, rather than just a good ending with no support. Obama is saying... "This is where we have to be" and I'm am sitting here saying, "No, $hit... Thanks Captain Obvious, now give me a way." I agree Pat, that Bush is failing miserably, but I also believe that he is doing better than people allow each other to believe. It isn't his fault we are in this mess necessarily. This is the greed of Banks, I am talking about the economy now, I am in the middle of it, working in financials smack in the middle of NYC. Trust me I am aware of what caused it. I've even been able to play it with a portfolio that is up 50%. And don't downplay the statement, that a person is smart on their own, but people in groups are what cause the chaos and stupidity. I don't care that it came from a stupid movie, people are sheep, everyone should know that.
  • Resolved Question: Can I move my car insurance now?
I am currently insuring my car with direct line and they are charging me £47 per month however I have just noticed that when i do an online quote with them- exactly the same cover as what I have its priced at £23 per month. Can I move my car insurance to a different company now or do I have to wait for the renewal date? If not why are they charging me so much more than their online quote? Also the cheeky gits charged me £60 to renew my address with them when i moved house....surely that can't be right??
  • Resolved Question: Are there any auto insurance providers that do not use credit problems against you to make rates higher?
I just had to switch auto insurance providers, and since I have credit problems due to credit card debt, anyone I have checked with uses my bad credit against me for insurance quotes. My driving record is excellent, and I am trying to find an insurance company who will insure me according to my driving record, and not my credit rating.
  • Resolved Question: How does dental deductibles work & what to do when I overpaid the office & they won't offer a refund or credit?
*My deductible is $1500. The office says I have about $600 left. What does that mean? Am I not allowed to go the dentist anymore? *I want to get wisdom teeth pulled out but the office's quote is different from the insurance company. Insurance told me $700 but one office says $3000 & another says $1500. The office said I will be reimbursed by the ins. co. They know they will get paid but why do they ask me to pay so much upfront? I'd rather pay $700 than $3000 or $1500. *Also, I paid both offices for exams and xrays that were covered. For office #1, I paid $91 for an exam. I received the EOB from ins. stating they paid $90 to the office and patient responsibility is $1. I haven't heard anything from them. *For office #2, I paid $164 for exam and xray. Insurance. covered it in full. Also, I had a tooth extracted from them that cost $325 and ins. paid $204. I get a bill from them saying I owe $325 when it should be $121. So wouldn't I get a refund or credit of $164 and have them apply it to the $121? What is going on? * Office #2 keep telling me ins. company will reimburse me. The ins. company said they have already paid them. Haven't heard nothing from office #1. So wouldn't the offices give me a refund? I really need help on what to do. I hate paying the extra money when I could use it for books, food, etc. My primary dentist overcharged me but they sent a statement that I could be given a credit for a cleaning or given a refund check. Why aren't the other offices doing the same thing? Help and broke?!
  • Open Question: How is Obama going to get his Health Care Plan to pass?
Quoting from the Link listed below titled "The Failed Health Care Reform Plan of 2009"-"In 1992, Bill Clinton put the call for universal health care at the center of his program. But, once president, his closeness to Wall Street and his intellectual dependence on Robert Rubin of Wall Street made him leery of antagonizing the insurance industry. It was President Clinton's unwillingness to confront the insurance companies that led to his failure to honor his commitment to work toward a universal health care program. It didn't work for Bill Clinton and he ended up forgoing it. It didn't work for Mitt Romney in Mass. How is Obama's going to work? And what is this fine McCain was talking about referring to Obama's HCP? LINK: http://www.alternet.org/healthwellness/79281/?page=1

  • Open Question: car accident, no police report.... what do i do?
I got into a minor car accident about ten days ago (other driver rear-ended me). My car had some bumper damage and a few dents on the trunk. The other driver was driving his company car and assured me he would take care of the damages, so no police report was filed. I wrote down his name and license # and he gave me his business card. He sent me a text message the following day, stating that he might have to go to his company's insurance, depending on the damage. He told me to get an estimate and fax it to him. I took the car to the shop and they quoted me $950 for repairs. I called him up and he was shocked at the price, and even stated that the pictures he took on his phone showed no visible damages. Nevertheless, he told me to fax the estimate to him, which I did. I haven't heard from him since, and he seems to be ignoring me. What can/should I do in this situation?
  • Resolved Question: Why does McCain want to tax my health insurance?
Although it is now clear McCain's ship is sinking, down 6-8 points in all reputable polls....I am still incredibly frightened about what McCain would do to the health care system if he somehow, god help us, wins. Why does he want to tax the tax credit for health care he proposes? Does this make any sense to anyone? Why does he think 5,000 dollar tax credit, when the average cost of health insurance for a family is 12,000 is going to help anything? Several recent nonpartisan studies estimate that under the McCain plan around 20 million Americans currently covered by their employers would lose their health insurance. Do you support this, if so why? Why do you want your fellow americans to lose their health insurance? That is not very patriotic of you. McCain was quoted recently saying "Opening up the health insurance market to more vigorous nationwide competition, as we have done over the last decade in banking, would provide more choices of innovative products less burdened by the worst excesses of state-based regulation." Soooo he wants to do what we did to the Banking system to the Healthcare system. Greaaaaat. This Healthcare plan is truly frightening. Here is an article from the nytimes breaking down McCain's healthcare plan. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/06/opinion/06krugman.html?em Since I know many of you only read news from Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaughs mouths... see johnmccain.com and read his plan for yourself and please tell me how this is going to help us. ***NOTE: Since I know it is hard for many of you Neo-Cons to compose an answer that is just a blatant attack smear of Obama or his positions, please humor me this time, and for once try and DEFEND your candidates plan. susanmarie- I appreciate your answer, but I am afraid you are incorrect in thinking it makes healthcare afforadable for everyone. Very simply avg family health insurance = 12,000 a taxed 5,000 will not do. I am suprised you supported hillary who would be appauled by McCains health program. She has spent her ENTIRE career fighting against crap like this. McCain fought against her on Medicare issues, S-CHIP, and all the other many health care initiatives she was so vital in. I love hillary, and all her work she has done for the healthcare program and that is EXACTLY why, I with her say "No way, No How, No McCain."

  • Resolved Question: Car insurance claim- does this sound right?
Ok so I live in Canada, I bought my car in Canada however it's originally from the states and it is done in miles. I got my car 3 years. It is a 1995 Mitsubishi mirage (only sold in the states, however the dodge colt is the Canadian equivalent) When I got the car around it had around 90,000 km (54,000 miles). I got in an accident at the end of august, writing off the car. The car was repairable but the repairs were worth more than the car was. The car had 135,000 km at that time and everything worked perfectly, I never had an issue with it. The interior and exterior were in good condition. The original car insurance quote for my car said I should get $4500 for it, however, I got a phone call this morning saying BECAUSE it is American they don't really have a comparison (but they do- the dodge colt)and I will only get $1800 for my car. I could've sold it for around $3500-4500 before I crashed it. What do you guys think about this? I don't know very much about insurance. oh I forgot, I bought it for $6000, if that is relevant

  • Voting Question: I'm turning 16 soon, and a quote says my insurance will cost $3000/year?
My parents just got a quote from Progressive (their insurance provider), and it said that it would cost approx. $3000 each year. Combined, it costs both of them about $1400 each year. I was wondering if this was an accurate quote, because it seems a little ludicrous... I don't see how ANY middle class family could afford this... My family's provider is Progressive. I have a 3.85 GPA, so should that lower the cost considerably?

  • Resolved Question: Home insurance - renewal?
My renewal is due soon and I have done a few quotes on comparison sites and here are some of the quotes £192 - Cover Direct £205 - EHome Insurance £504 - Privilege £602 - Churchhill £663 - Tesco Now the companies that are heard of and the companies not heard of, there is a very big difference and the exact same details, which would you go for? It was built in 1900 and is within 1/4 mile of a river but has never flooded in at least 20 years (I lived close by for about 20 years). I think this these are the 2 main reasons for the big difference.
  • Voting Question: My car was hit in a parking lot. Am I required to get it fixed in order to collect the money for damages?
My neighbor hit my car and doesn't want to go through insurance. She scraped my bumper and bent my fender a little. After giving her the quoted amount of $950 she told me to get it fixed and then she would take care of it. This isn’t how it works is it? What should I do? Even if she gave me money I am not required to get it fixed am I? Also, If I am to fix it I need the money up front or something set up ahead of time. I will also need to have a rental car and I am not sure she is taking that into account. I don’t want to risk being stuck with the bill if something happens and she doesn’t or can’t pay.
  • Voting Question: yahoo answers question ?
I frequent the insurance/registration area and am wondering if those people who answer with a link to an auto quote website and things like that get reported? Should you report them all the time? Also do they make money by doing this? They don't even come close to answering a question. The question may be I was in a car wreck what do I do and the answer is sorry to hear that but then there is some big spiel and a link for auto insurance. To top it off they get 2 points. If I don't know the answer or if I see numerous posts that are accurate I move on. I can't be the only one that thinks this way. Thoughts from the community???

  • Resolved Question: Are you insured with Progressive insurance?
I am just curious how the claim process is and coverage. We currently have Allstate and I did a quote for progressive and it was way cheaper. We hit a deer last weekend and our car has been at one of their prefered shops for a week now and I can't get any answers as to what is going on and we didn't have rental reimburstment so we are really struggling and they don't care. So I was just curious if progressive is any better they advertise that they are fast and care but we all know that places lie. (LOL) Anyway thanks in advance.
  • Resolved Question: Who is "Julian Sweet"? Anyone? Anyone?
I came home form work the last Thursday and Friday to a full answering machine with messages for a person named Julian Sweet (I don't know who that is and his name is nowhere near my name). "Julian" apparently was online early Thursday and made MANY online requests for various services - home based businesses, auto/home/health insurance, travel packages, etc. and left my phone number in the request. We're talking hundreds of requests. In the last three days I have had over 90 phone calls from different businesses seeking "Julian." Today I started receiving mail for "Julian". One of the items was for a new home owner's insurance policy quote - and based upon the details in the proposal, this person knew my address, the year the home was built, a correct value, when the wiring was last checked... the whole nine yards. I have lived at this address and had this phone number for ten years. I tried to think if there was anyone I had angered recently but I am drawing a blank. I don't really have "enemies"... it's crazy. So who is "Julian Sweet"? Aside from being irritating and annoying, should I be worried about this? A friend of mine said that there are people who can with "one click" enter my information online and it is sent to hundreds of companies and it will look like I want their services. Is this true? And does anyone know how to make this stop, aside from changing my phone number and moving? Thanks for your help...

I have lived at this address and had this phone number for ten years. I tried to think if there was anyone I had angered recently but I am drawing a blank. I don't really have "enemies"... it's crazy.

  • Resolved Question: What insurance would be required for my start up electric rental car business?
I am starting a small business. I'm going to rent electric cars (GEM Cars) to local visitors in my very touristy Florida area. I WILL NOT OWN THESE CARS... I am leasing them from another company. So I'm not looking for insurance for the actual cars, but a higher level business insurance and liabiity insurance. (I think?) My actual business will have no major assets (I will ease the cars, office space and all equiptment) I have no idea what type of insurance policy and coverage I would need to ensure my liability coverage. Can anyone provide some assistance on the types of policy and coverages I will need? Also, any ideas on what companies, brokers/agents would be able o quote me or sell the policy? Thanks!!! - The other question I have is, does the third party company that I am leasing these cars from have any exposure to the actions of my rental buisness?
  • Resolved Question: Hit by out of state trucker. Won't cooperate. Any help?
I was hit by an out of state truck driver. I have my health insurance and the hospital on my back to pay the bills. The trucking firm that owns the rig won't even return my phone calls now. All I need is their insurance company name or number. On their website they quote how honest and how much integrity they have. See www.premotrucking.com (?it is their advertising website in the public domain.) And I talked to Ken and he told me he would get me the info I need ... Now he just ignores me. If there are any honest people in Michigan I haven't met them yet. Sorry. Any help would be appreciated. My neck still cracks and pops but nothing is broken so I don't have a huge claim. I do not drive without insurance. Somehow my ins. co. won't get involved unless I pay my deductible, otherwise they are "legally bound", so what do I pay ins. for in the first place? I have a police report, with pics. A lawyer won't touch it unless it is at least 10k It's a bit difficult to sue somebody a thousand miles away!
  • Voting Question: Why do insurance agents make more selling whole life ins?
I've been reading in Yahoo Answers that insurance agents make more by selling whole life than term life insurance, but if most (95% ) people die after the term is up, the ins co keeps the money invested from the customer. Whole life ins is invested or paid by the customer every month and their benefiary gets 100% what the insurance amount that was quoted the day the customer bought it. If the quote was 100,000 or 1,000,000 that is what the benefiary receives. So you would think the agents would get paid more selling term insurance. Dear Car, I know with term ins the benif. does get 100% . I took out a couple years ago whole ins so my 2 kids get a lot of money when I die. I don't pay that much each month. The money my kids will get is much more than I could save in the next 25 years. I took it out when I was 55 retired. And try saving it in mutual funds these days and you lose. I guess you mean investing in CD's?
  • Voting Question: Has Sarah Palin expressed her opposition to Medicare ?
Sarah Palin quoted Ronald Regan in her closing remarks of the VP debate using a statement he made in a 1962 recording he did for the AMA where he warned against the loss of our freedom if Medicare were to be enacted. Did she think it was just a cool quote and not understand he was rallying against Medicare, deeming it "socialized" medicine that would lead to us losing our freedom? Just curious whether she is opposed to medicare, which has done a great job of providing medical insurance coverage to seniors. Actually, Bob Hebert asked the same question and comes to a conclusion that makes sense to me: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/04/opinion/04herbert.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin Mark3254: You did not answer the question and instead just attempted to conflate rising health care costs with medicare/medicaid. You don't supply any data to prove this, but the truth is health care costs are rising for multiple reasons, including an increase in the expectation of and the demand for services over the years and a growing elderly population. The fact is Medicare was necessary because private insurers will not provide services at a cost necessary to support people on limited income. True private insurers pick up more of the tab, but can we simply deny health care to people in need? I know the conservative (which you obviously are) view is everyone should take care of themselves, but fundamentally that is not a practical view and private insurers will not, because they are business for profit.
