  • Open Question: Is McCain's Record on Hurricane Katrina victims how he will handle issues if elected?
http://www.motherjones.com/mojoblog/archives/2008/04/8059_john_mccains_mi.html John McCain's Miserable Record on Hurricane Katrina John McCain's Time for Action tour arrived in New Orleans Thursday, where McCain toured the hurricane-damaged 9th Ward and criticized both the Bush Administration and Congress for its handling of the disaster. Lamenting the pace of recovery, McCain said, "I want to assure you it will never happen again in this country. You have my commitment and my promise." But McCain's record on Hurricane Katrina suggests that he was part of the problem, not the solution. McCain was on Face the Nation on August 28, 2005, as Katrina gathered in the Gulf Coast. He said nothing about it. One day later, when Katrina made landfall in Louisiana, McCain was on a tarmac at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona, greeting President Bush with a cake in celebration of McCain's 69th birthday. Three days later, with the levees already breached and New Orleans filling with water, McCain's office released a three-sentence statement urging Americans to support the victims of the hurricane. Though McCain issued a statement the next week calling on Congress to make sacrifices in order to fund recovery efforts, he was quoted in The New Leader on September 1 cautioning against over-spending in support of Katrina's victims. "We also have to be concerned about future generations of Americans," he said. "We're going to end up with the highest deficit, probably, in the history of this country." That attitude was borne out in McCain's actions and votes. Forty Senators and 100 members of Congress visited New Orleans before he did; he finally got there in March 2006. He voted against establishing a Congressional commission to examine the Federal, State, and local responses to Katrina in med-September 2005. He repeated that vote in 2006. He voted against allowing up to 52 weeks of unemployment benefits to people affected by the hurricane, and in 2006 voted against appropriating $109 billion in supplemental emergency funding, including $28 billion for hurricane relief. Shortly after the disaster in New Orleans, McCain did introduce a bill that sought to improve communications mechanisms for first-responders and authorities. The bill failed to go anywhere, and McCain later voted against other bills that had similar provisions. McCain may talk sympathetically about New Orleans' recovery this week, but the record shows that when it mattered most, McCain failed to act. His passion for fiscal conservatism blinded him to a city and a region in need, and his Time for Action is simply too late. steve_miller: How about a man running for president? If he didn't give a dam (or levee) then than he wouldn't as President. He'd be all over himself to "Rebuild " Iraq if his cronies benefitted.
  • Open Question: Haunted Tours in New Orleans?
My boyfriend and I are going to New Orleans this weekend (it's my first time visiting) and we both want to do a haunted tour. I get freaked out really easily but he loves scary stuff. I'm looking for something that's really interesting/exciting/ and only kinda creepy, not something that will make me have nightmares :) Should we do a ghost tour or a cemetery tour? Who offers the best tours? Thanks!! :)
  • Open Question: Has anyone been on this jazz musical trip through New Orleans, Memphis, Nashville...?
My family is eager to visit. There is a coach tour that takes us through the states of Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee. In our trip, we apparently visit Montgomery, New Orleans, this paddleboat on the Mississippi river, Elvis museum in Memphis, Nashville and "Graceland", and apparently the trip is based on musical jazz. I am looking forward to it but I havent a clue what the trip is about. Has somebody on here been on this trip. If so, can someone please share their experiences, tell me what goes on in the trip, tell me all about this trip and what you thought about it. Thank you very much xxxx.

  • Resolved Question: Travel in Louisana recommendations, pls
Can you give me a short 10 day itenerary to enjoy Louisiana for 2 adults, a teen, and a 5 year old girl. We'll start in New Orleans French Quarter for 4 days (Sat-Wed, and several days in Baton Rouge (Wed-Fri), but we have Fri-Mon left to fill in and would like to have an idea what else to do. Also we're not sure since we want to travel where the best swamp tour is (is it better in New Orleans or elsewhere). We definetly want to feel the Cajun, Creole, Arcadian adventure, need to know which plantation is the best, which swamp park is the best. It seems like every town has a swamp, a plantation, and everything else, but we'd like to find the ultimate of each to do in the state so we can best enjoy.

Also, we are looking for some good places to eat...nothing necessarily fancy...just good food where the locals go. Any advice would be much appreciated! :)

The one with all the money also has her 18 year old sister coming along. She wants to buy 80 tickets (w/fees) to the Essence festival and I really don't want to spend that much on one place. I sent out an email to everyone listing EVERYTHING we can do that weekend. Including zoos (boring) or even a ghost tour. What would ya'll suggest our schedule be like? I want my friends to respond so we don't get out there with no clue and people get mad cuz they don't get to do what they want to, but none of them have responded to my initial email. • Resolved Question: My latest poem, what do you think? Criticism welcome.?
I'm tired of living in these conditions, so I'm bumming a ride to Denver, I hear it has its share of love. Driver, pass me your soul, your love and your misunderstandings, I'm no angel, but I'm no demon. Every man has his own. Cracked and tired, slowly making my way north, Denver lost its appeal, the scene has been reduced to madness, the souls there are up to no good, or perhaps misunderstood? Hopping a train for New Orleans, going south now, the kicks along the way are free, no need to worry, the bums are friendly and take communion with tea and records of Gillespie. Pass me your understandings, just don't let me fall over, the ground rushes up to fast, and being all worked up, that would do me no good. New Orleans, your a beautiful sad angel, you yearn for your knight, he's busy touring the gardens of Rome, and refuses to look your way. Your people are scared and tired, I'm sorry I'm sorry, I love your Jazz, I miss love, and the house of thine risin' sun.

  • Resolved Question: Does anyone know what the Louisiana (New Orleans ) Tour Guide exam consists of?
I am studying for the test, apparently blindly...As well as with cold feet. Even though I had been a tour guide for Nola in the past, it has been rumoured that the test has changed, gotten longer as well as harder. I cannot remember the questions, and I just wish to start out on a clean slate. I do have a copy of the Beautiful Crescent, but without any of the questions to research my answers for, I am still in the dark....And would love help from the community at large.

What are your 5 favorite places you've been to or would like to visit? Mine are in no particular order, 1. Scotland (been already, but want to go back) 2. • Resolved Question: Have you ever been to New Orleans?
If so, how was your experience there? I've been twice already and I'm going back on the 13th The first time I was in the fifth grade and it was for a class trip so I didnt really get to do my own thing, nor was I old enough. The second time I was with my dad over spring break of this year and we were really only there so his girlfriend could get some plastic surgery, it wasnt that great, the only good part was the fact that we got to take one of those haunted tours [the vampire one]. This time I'm going with a family friend who has to do some work there, after she's done with work, we're gonna go shopping.
  • Resolved Question: Why is referring to the George Clinton concert as "the Mothership" a pun?
Matt Cibula of Pop Matters had this to say after seeing George CLinton and Parliament Funkadelic "This was the single greatest concert I have ever seen in my life. This beats R.E.M. on their Preconstruction tour when they were young and hungry and wanted to kick some ass. This beats Dizzy Gillespie at the Blue Note two months before he died. This beats being at the taping of "Rapmania" at the Apollo in 1989, where everyone who was anyone in hip-hop was tearing it up and the hardcore Harlem crowd was booing L.L. for being soft ("don't call it a comeback" my ass). This even beats watching Boozoo Chavis and Beau Jocque in a battle of the bands at the Rock'N'Bowl in New Orleans. This, people, was the Mothership."
  • Resolved Question: Is Tours, France, multicultural?

  • Resolved Question: Why hasn't the government done anything about the damage from Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans?
I visited New Orleans last year, and took a tour of the lower ninth ward where most of the damage is (which was two years after the hurricane). Families were living in small trailers that were next to their homes or in trailer parks if their homes were totally destoyed. They claim to fix the problems with the levies, but from looking at them, I could not tell. There is still alot to been done....

  • Resolved Question: What else not to miss in New Orleans?
Since arriving a few days ago, we have attended one day of Jazz fest, eaten at Cafe Du Monde, shopped the French Market, walked through the French Quarter, walked along Frenchman Street, gone to Bourbon Street at night, taken a haunted Garden District Tour, seen the Lafayette Cemetery, eaten at Commander's Palace, ridden the St. Charles Street car, taken the ferry to Algiers Point and back (my husband sat in on soprano sax for an open mic night at Old Point bar), had a tarot card reading in Jackson Square. Any other suggestions on things we shouldn't miss out on while we're here? we'll be at Jazz Fest Thursday and Saturday and we leave Sunday morning.
  • Resolved Question: Commander's Palace Dress Code?
We're in New Orleans, but only brought somewhat casual clothes with us. We have a reservation at Commander's Palace for lunch. Will they turn us away if my husband is wearing nice jeans and I am wearing capri pants (below the knee)? We know they have a dress code, but our ghost tour guide yesterday said she thought they would accept nice jeans. We don't want to ask the restaurant because we're hoping they might be nicer if we just show up, but want to know what to expect.
