  • Open Question: Which is a bigger deal - playing for a big university orchestra or playing for a small city orchestra?
My boyfriend is trying to figure out where to go for university. He is an amazing musician and could get into many orchestras. He lives in Regina, Saskatchewan and might be able to get a position in their orchestra. However, he would definitely be able to play for the UBC orchestra in Vancouver if he came here for university. I would think playing for a well-known university would be just as, if not more amazing than playing for an orchestra in a small city in Canada. Does anyone know anything on this subject? I would really appreciate it. Thanks :) He may want to play in an orchestra in the future, but he will not be getting a degree in music. He's thinking more for the experience, connections, etc.

  • Resolved Question: How much time it will take to get immigration to British Columbi under the PNP for an internationl student?
Hai, I am going to British columbia under their international student program and wish to file the papers for immigration after completing my studies which is a diploma of two years duration in an institution recognised by the Govt of B.C The course I am taking is in General insurance and risk management and the Govt site clearly states that the study hould be in such a course that it is eligible for immigration, to the international students. There is no mention of the gen insurancce as the eligbile course. However, in some universities the site gives information if a particular course is eligible for considertion to immigration. For ex I tried with cosmetology in Saskatchewan as well as BC and I got the answer that this course is eligible. But for the general insurance I could not get the answer. Can som one tell me if this course is eligible for immigration to BC under their pnp? Further I have read on the internet that for the BC immigration under the PNP, there is no need to join a job that is related to the studies. This is one of the reasons for choosing B.C and infact this is what I got in some other PNP sites.(For ex-Saskatchewan). Is this correct. My situtation is that I have completed diplomas from reputed institutions in India in cosmetology and I am also appearing for an international online diploma like CIDEC or City and guilds etc. I wish to work for sometime after my education in BC if I do not immediately get a good job in the insurance field and hence this queswtion. Another requirement is, even if the gen ins course is eligible, is it necessary for the applicant to have comleted the subjects with about 70 % as mentioned in the immigration site of Canada. Nadia
  • Resolved Question: Is it possible to get adm at all for a girl like me?- A girl from Bombay(Forgetting the mavericlname Mumbai?
Hai everyone, This is one of the wornderful sources to get a well informed and mature answer and hence this question. I am a girl aged about 23 and has always had only average acedamic record of around 42% in intermediate and still struggling to complete one subject of accounts in the final year of my B.Com from Bombay university in India.Out of certain economic compulsions I am forced to think of immigration to canada under anyof the PNP of Canada and a place like BC or Saskatchewan are what I have been seriously trying to figure out. However I find that everywhere they are asking for about 70to 80 % average in studies and they want Maths everywhere. (Even for courses like Cosmetology and hari cutting) they are asking for a writtne examination to be passed and that too have an exam to be passed in Maths.I WONDER WHAT A BARBER HAS TO DO WITH MATHS AND THE PROFICIENCY IN THIS SUBJECT IS FOR WHAT NOBLE END? Does lthis suggest thal all these people in canada are wizards in Maths. What about people like me even when it is admitted that I am seeking a livelihood in this country called canada. No disrepect for the gr people of canada but why are these people obsessed with Maths and for unrelated courses like Haircuttng and cosmetology and haircutting asking someone to face an exam in Maths is something unreasonble. Can this august forum tell me if I can find a college recognised for immigration purpose in canada to gain admission in Cosmetology/haircutting/esthetics and if so the details are gratefully accepted. • Resolved Question: How do I convince my mother to move?
We live in the rich part of town as people would put it....but at my school there are girls who threatened me and verbally abuse me everyday. They live in my neighborhood and I cant go to the local park or convenience store without seeing them. I would really like to move into a different neighborhood and go to a different high school. The house would be a little large (seven rooms six bathrooms) but It would be close to the University so I was thinking we could rent out the nannies attachment. It would be a five minute drive from the high school I would like to go to. Also it would be five minutes from downtown(where my mother works). Also It has an indoor pool and we live in Saskatchewan so a indoor pool would be great, and I have always wanted one, as my mom knows. no im not trying to let people know that I am rich thank you very much. I was stating that we would have enough funding for it. Also even if school gets taken care of (such as them getting punished for it) that will only anger them and I see them outside of school quite often also. I have told my mom but she and the rest of my family said to just ignore them and dont listen. I WAS NOT BRAGGING I WAS RICH! I was just stating that we would have the funding for it which helps okay? I am not rich. Never said that at all. Just said we lived in the rich part of town.

Hi! Im doing a propsal for my sociology (research methods) class. Im having trouble picking up a relevent sociological topic to present in my prosposal. I don't want to seem to unadvanced because i did a socio paper on homelessness in my first year socio class. I wanted to something like: "Substance abuse on reserves in saskatchewan (or canada)" "Pregnant mothers and university education (on-campus learning)"? • Resolved Question: Drivers licence process is overkill! How long does it take where you live?
Here in PEI, we used to have an extremely depth-less licence program. Permit at 15 1/2, and licence at 16. So, reasonably, they changed it to the GDL program adopted everywhere else in Canada, (besides Nunavut). But, I think that they went a bit overboard. We now have the lengthiest program in Canada, and you can't get your full licence until you're 19--the oldest in Canada. That means that if you want your licence, you have to come home from university to get it. Apart from Saskatchewan, we are the only 4 Level (Permit, Novice 1, Novice 2, Full) in Canada. I think this is a bit much--seeing as our roads are flat and straight, there's no speeds over 90, and we don't even have highways. 18 years of age is fine, but anything over that is inconvenient and unnecessary. What do you think? How difficult and long is it where you live?

I am living in Saskatchewan and am very interested in studying to become a midwife. From what I have learned the only universities that offer degrees are UBC and 3 in Ontario. • Resolved Question: Choosing between community college or university for accounting?
I completed a Bachelors of Science degree and Masters of Science degree. Because the jobs are limited in my field, I decided to pursue an accounting designation within Canada. The accounting designations require a degree, but open to any degree. So if I wanted to pursue accounting, would it really matter if I went to SIAST Palliser (the trade school/community college) or back to the University of Saskatchewan for my degree? SIAST's tuition is way cheaper , but I'm trying to figure out the costs for attending SIAST for accounting rather than register in the School of Business program at university.
  • Resolved Question: Is a degree from McGill worth an extra 50 thousand dollars?
I have about 4 days to decide whether to accept an offer for a science undergrad program at McGill, or stay at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, where I currently live. I don't know what I want to do with my life, but I am keeping med school open as a an option. I know that the chance of me getting into med at McGill is pretty slim even after attending for four years, as they only accept 5-10 out of province students. But their name on a resume=instant cred. If I stay at home, I will be able to get really high marks and good recs at the UofS and still get into a good grad school for university. However, if I stay t the UofS, will the quality of my education suffer? Do I really need to have the McGill name on my resume to get into a good grad school? Will living at home make me socially lame and cause me to miss a vital life experience? I guess what I'm asking: is a McGill undergrad science degree really worth 60 extra K? Is the experience worth it? Will I regret not going?
  • Resolved Question: my earlier question - can you get pregnant at any time of the month???
Women may ovulate more than once a month, suggests a Canadian study that overturns conventional views on the human menstrual cycle. The findings may explain why the rhythm method of contraception is so unreliable and could lead to improved, targeted fertility treatments in the future. Ten per cent of the women studied released two eggs in the same month. And all the women examined by researchers at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Canada showed at least two waves of maturing eggs in their ovaries in the same month. Traditionally, it has been thought that ovulation takes place only once in every menstruation cycle. A growth wave of 15 to 20 egg-carrying cells called follicles occurs before ovulation. One follicle will become dominant while the others die off. "It's been assumed until now that women have just one wave per monthly cycle, leading to one ovulation, but nobody has actually carried out detailed analysis before," said Roger Pierson, who led the study. "In fact, all the women in our study had at least two waves and 30 per cent of them had three." Fertility treatment. The team carried out daily, high resolution trans-vaginal ultrasound examinations on 63 women with normal menstrual cycles who were aged between 18 and 40. Over six weeks, the women's individual follicles were measured. During the study, 50 of the women ovulated only once, but six ovulated twice and seven not at all. The next stage of the research will be to find out why some waves lead to ovulation while others do not. "We don't know why some waves lead to ovulation and others don't. But we want to utilise our new understanding of the menstrual cycle to be able to carry out better timing of in-vitro fertilization," Pierson told New Scientist. Progesterone secretion from the corpus leuteum - a temporary hormone-producing gland that is formed at ovulation - may cause a surge in a reproductive hormone called luteinizing hormone, he says. This might have an inhibitory effect on further egg release during the menstrual cycle, which could explain why some of the women did not ovulate twice despite having two growth waves in their ovarian tissue. It may be possible in the future to harness some non-ovulating waves into releasing eggs for couples having trouble conceiving, he added. The unexpected findings may also explain why the conception rate for non-identical twins is as high as 10 per cent. "It could be that more than one dominant follicle is produced during a wave or that dual conception arises as a result of two waves in a cycle releasing eggs," ventured Pierson. Journal reference: Fertility and Sterility(vol 80, p 116) here is the link to my earlier question - http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Apbub2s6q299EpiDtSSxnMYgBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20080601231757AAA0lpJ copy and paste it into your browser if you cant go right there So after being told by people that you only ovulate once a month i have found out that this is just not true some people do ovulate up to 3 times so this must be what my doctor was talking about when he said i was very fertile. (this is for the woman who told me to let her know what i find out about it except i cant email her.) also if some people can ovulate 3 times per month and only have a 21 - 24 day cycle does that mean you ovulate once a week? god let me finish writing you morons!!!!!!!!!

  • Resolved Question: Should I stay at home to go to university or move to a bigger city?
So I need to decide by the end of the week if I want to attend the University of Saskatchewan, in my home town of Saskatoon, or move to Montreal to go to McGill university. I have a 3000 dollar scholarship to both, but obviously it will cost a lot more money to go to live on my own in Montreal. I speak French, so that isn't a problem. If I stay at home, I'm afraid that I'll be missing an opportunity to get a better education, as I am heading into a career in science or medicine, and McGill is among the best universities in Canada and the world. Also, I'll gain independence by living on my own and meet a lot of new people. If I stay at home, it will cost less and I will be able to stay near my Mom, who I'm close to, and a a few of my friends who are also staying. I will also save a lot of money and will probably still be able to become a doctor or scientist. My Mom will be really sad if I go because she will be living alone. Do you think that it is worth it to move to McGill?

  • Resolved Question: Cover Letter for a Minimally Experienced Waitress?
So, I'm a third year university student studying Political Science. I have had office jobs, doing policy research for the government, put together huge briefing documents and even did internal communications for a huge Saskatchewan business. But what I really want to do this summer is work as a waitress/beer cart girl at a golf course. I know it sounds crazy, but I want something that isn't me cooped up in an air conditioned office all day. I have had very limited waitressing experience, I was basically a substitute bar waitress for three weeks before Christmas. One of the waitresses had surgery and couldn't work for that time and I needed some extra money before Christmas and a big move. I was good at it, the boss wished he could keep me and it was a hopping place. I guess just because I have no idea what is looked for in this industry what is important to include in a waitressing cover letter that would put me over the top? Thanks!!

  • Resolved Question: I really need some academic advising back to college or university..... Hope someone can help. Thanks a lot!?
I am having a dilemma right now. I have high school in Hong Kong (AL & OL) and UK (GCE AL & OL), a year in Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Business), a year in University of Saskatchewan (Arts and Science/ got some passes there), got a class in SAIT Polytechnic.... I am sure if I love Commerce (Human Resources Management or Accounting), but it just works for me (somehow I can easy to understand). I am interested in Sociology, but I am not sure if I can handle it. I know my grades are not currently meet the GPA requirement for B. Comm. for most of the universities, but fortunately SAIT gives me admission to Business Administration dipolma (1st 2 years of Applied degree, if in Accounting stream/ and then can head towards Applied Degree in Accounting/ when I have a good standing in diploma, I may apply for B.Comm.). U of Regina, U of Manitoba and U of Saskatchewan gives me admission to just BA program. I am not sure which route I should go. I really don't want to waste time anymore. I am not sure if I was being too discouraged by my high school experiences, so makes me fear about choosing majors. I took different majors as I went through from high school to university. From Grade 10-11 (I was in the Science stream/ HK system needs high school students to choose their stream in Grade 10 ), then from Grade 12-13 (I was in Business stream) In Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Business), then in University of Saskatchewan (in Economics/ but I don't like it )
