I have been taking the maximum dose of tramadol for about ten years. It was prescribed to me by my regular primary care physician for "fibromyalgia." At that time he told me that it was "non-habit forming" and not a narcotic, but that "they" really were not sure HOW it worked, just that it did.
Flash forward ten years. I've taken between two and five of the 50-milligram tablets three times a day - EVERY DAY - for the last ten years. There have been times when for some reason or other I have run out, which is absolute HELL. The withdrawal is horrible and even a few hours late on a dosage causes severe bone pain, incredible fatigue, sweats, fever, diarrhea, depression, shakes, etc.
Sometimes I feel like a heroin addict. I actually MUST have the tramadol in order to function at all. Yesterday, again, I almost ran out and had to go 16 hours without any. I couldn't get my prescription filled because the pharmacy said I was 20 days early for a refill! Perhaps having taken it for so long now I have built up some tolerance. I have found myself lying about "lost" pills, a teenaged relative "stealing" them, etc. I've gone to a few doctors and different pharmacies in order to be able to keep a constant supply. In other words, acting exactly like an addict. Also, I'm only 41, but taking tramadol for so long has ruined my teeth. It dries out the mouth and allows decay to set in. I actually have teeth that break off at the gumline as I eat french fries. I have already spent almost $8,000 on implants for the top teeth only - and I haven't even gotten to the bottoms yet.
I am depressed about the situation, but I don't think I have the stamina to be able to quit alone. Is there a support group out there, or anyone who has successfully quit taking tramadol after a long period? I sure could use the help and support of people who know how tramadol acts and how it feels. I feel desperate about a time when I won't have it and what will happen.
I don't know anyone else who has taken this drug and who understands the problem. Everyone says to just cut down and tough it out. Help!!!!!

Voting Question: where to buy prescriptions?
Are there any other medicantions that you can purchase online without a prescription besides tramadol?
Resolved Question: Brain damage from pain killers (tramadol)?
I was recently diagnosed with mononucleosis, and have been suffering intense sore throat as a result. I went to my family doctor yesterday to tell her about the pain, and she prescribed me a bottle of 50mg tramadol tablets. I told her that I had a very bad reaction to Lortab (hydrocodone), but she said that tramadol likely wouldn't give me the same trouble.
So, I went home and took one tablet of tramadol as per her advice. After an hour and a half, it didn't seem to be affecting me, so I took a second tablet (her prescription was for 1 to 2 tablets every six hours). After another hour, I suddenly felt extremely tired and dizzy, and could barely keep my head up. My pupils were constricted, and though I wasn't hallucinating or shaking, I was afraid that I was suffering from a mild overdose. I started to get an intense headache about six hours after taking the initial pill. Thankfully, I stayed awake for the next ten hours and the symptoms began to subside, so I slept for the night. Today I've woken up without the headache, but I still feel drowsy and like my head is stuffed with cotton. I feel like I can't concentrate or think straight, and I've been making typos all day long. I also have a feeling of pressure behind my forehead.
I'm worried about what happened to me on tramadol. After looking up online testimonials, I've read that it's extremely addictive and can lead to seizure and adverse reactions in people who react badly to opiates. I have no idea why my doctor wouldn't tell me this. Do you think I'm still suffering mild side effects of yesterday's dose, or is there a potential that I've permanently damaged my brain by taking 100mg of tramadol? I weigh about 130 pounds. Is there a minimum amount which leads to overdose? Has anyone else had a bad experience with tramadol?

Resolved Question: chronic pain management and best new medications?
I have lumbar spinal cord arachnoiditis, the result of failed back surgery and the aging process. I have been through some hell the last few days after discontinuing methadone. I was told it was effective. Unfortunately, I was not told it is one, mean drug to discontinue. I was just tired of feeling like a criminal when I had my prescription filled. I feel like a truck rolled over me. I was only taking 10 mg. a day... I tried my best not to go up on the dosage, and I succeeded. I never got total pain relief and now I am paying a heavy price. Any information on some newer, effective medications or therapies would be appreciated. Right now I am taking Neurontin. Tramadol did nothing for me and hydrocodone works for a short while but I am looking for a better long term solution. I have a great life in front of me.... I want to live it without all the pain I have right now.
Resolved Question: How early can pharmacies refill prescriptions?
I am in a situation where there is a chance I might be going away next week (monday-tuesday). If I was just going on vacation, I'd transfer my script to one near where I'll be, problem is I'm gonna be out camping, and thus not near any stores.
I had a month supply of tramadol with 3 refills. The month supply is set to run out on may 13th(when i will be gone), and today is may 7th. Do pharmacies usually give you refills like this a couple days early? I would rather not call the pharmacy and give them my story because I don't want them to think I'm just trying to get drugs early. I guess I'm just curious if they will give you a refill 5-6 days early, even without some major excuse? I'll point out I have no insurance.

Resolved Question: Severe Abdominal Pain-Female?
I have been having Severe Left Abdominal Pain in the Ovary location for the past year on and off.
However, this past January it became so severe that I passed out at work had to be taken to the hospital.
Pain killers did not work after 3 different prescriptions. Two of the perscribed we Tramadol and Hyrdocodone
The Pelvic exam and CT scan showed no signs of anything. Not even Cysts, which I have a past history off.
The scans showed that I have the normal amount of fluid in my Abdominal Cavity.
It has not been as severe of pain or as constant in the past month, but about 3 times a week I will have that burst of pain in the area that forces me to stop what Im doing.
I am so miserable with this pain. I can't even perform daily tasks anymore without fearing that I will be dropped to my knees in such pain
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing it?
they have checked my pancreas with a blood test and it came out negative.
My doctor hinted that I was being a hypocondriac, and so did the ER. I've become so upset by this.
It's a real issue, and the pain is real. I hate living like this.
Voting Question: Should I tell my doctor I illegaly took a painkiller and ask him for stronger ones?
I posted a question a while ago about asking my doctor for pills about back pains...next time I went in he prescribed me a trial of Tramadol, which in the end did absolutely nothing. It takes forever to get an appointment with him, and I go back to see him this Wednesday. My friend just recently had mouth surgery, and he offered me one of his vicodin to help my pain. I took it, a whole pill (he said half of one helped his surgery pain), and it didn't do anything at all for my pain. My question is, should I tell my doctor that I took it and it didn't help? I mean, it is illegal to take the vicodin without a prescription, but it'd be pointless if he ended up offering me vicodin if I know it didn't work at all...any suggestions?
I took the Tramadol at 300mg doses once a day, which he said was pretty much the highest it should go. I've been off of that for about 2 weeks before I took this Vicodin, so I think it should be okay as far as mixing goes. But I guess I'll just tell him, there's suppose to be that whole "doctor-patient confidentiality" right?

Resolved Question: Anyone have experience with disc problems?
My husband coughed about 3 weeks ago and has been in pain ever since. An x-ray showed what they think is a degenerated disc (MD wasn't sure without an MRI). Nothing helps the pain. He's tried many prescriptions with no relief; vicodin, tramadol, a steroid pack and muscle relaxers (not all at once). Cold packs and heat don't help either. Tomorrow he goes for an MRI and then hopefully some epidural injections.
In the mean time what can I do to help him get some sleep tonight? Lying down hurts, the lazy boy chair hurts, the couch hurts, etc. ANyone have any ideas how to relieve the pain without drugs?
Tried to give him a gentle massage, he won't let me touch his back it hurts like hell he says. If you put pressure in a certain spot it sends tingles all down his leg to his foot.
